ok so im a bisexual guy. really relate to this one character, keith kogane from voltron. im not like a super fucking. buff guy. like im kind of toned but i have a slight stomach and im not ripped or anything, im still fairly soft. i feel like my body type is pretty average for men (im super short tho lmao). and one of the reasons i really like this character is bc the art style of vld made him like...a twink! the guy has no muscles or anything, hes very much a twink. here is him compared to his brother:
i think you can probably guess which is which.
anyway so i like that keith is small like this. he's still stick-skinny in a way that kinda sucks, but it's a cartoon, whatever. the animators for this show clearly worked to make a distinction between the buff shiro and the comparatively lean/lithe keith.
so why do artists continue to put more muscles and masculinity on keith than there actually is! i constantly see him drawn with big muscles, square jawlines, not a lot of clothes...they like. action hero him up when thats just not how he fucking looks in canon. and it sucks to see someone i relate to deeply being given those traits that i can't ever achieve. my boyfriend sent me this text earlier when i was ranting about this:
"i get that :( and i think it’s good to recognize that feeling, and also good to forgive yourself that it’s hard to see people ascribe an unachievable body to someone you relate to a lot and find comfort in when you’re already dealing with body dysmorphia in the first place"
and like. yeah that about sums it up. i have issues w my body, as everyone does, and seeing these stereotypically masculine characteristics placed on a character i relate to soooo much is just disheartening. bc it's like. i'll never be that, i'll never be able to be that. but everyone seems to like it when keith is that, so it must be better to be that. this is when people thirst over him or whatever. i sound very mentally ill here but im just going through my feelings and complaining abt how much it sucks. i wish the wlw artists that dominate the voltron fandom would pause and think for a second what changing his body type from what it is in canon (and what makes SENSE for the kind of person he is, i would argue) can imply about the "desired" bodies of men as a whole. ugh
