before i start i know the title seems kind of weird i swear im not those people who say 'im stuck in the wrong generation' i promise i just want to highlight some things i see that gen z do (especially on tik tok) and how we can improve them. i like being in gen z, i like that our generation is one the first to be more progressive (well thats kind of lie obvs but im trying to state a point that out generation is more aware and educated on things like homophobia, racism and sexism and their effects on society).
calling people mostly boys 'zesty' or 'sus' is homophobic
i know some people are going to get angry at me for this but let me explain. calling people zesty or sus is common practice on places like tik tok or even in real life, ive seen this many times myself. when people call people 'sus' or 'zesty' is basically saying that being gay is being weird/extra. this mockes gay men's mannerisms, this could also sterotype people. saying that to be gay they have to look, talk or act in certain way when a gay man can look, talk or act like anything. its a new chapter of homophobia that i see a lot in other forms of discrimination. like racism and misogyny (i will get to that later), its a new age where we see gay men as punchline for a 'joke'. the thing is lots of people in gen z claim to be against homophobia, that they are better than other generations but are we? or we conceal the progressive activism with jokes. our generation is far for perfection i know that but its a bit frustrating for me as a black person who is part of lgbtq and is perceived as a women to see white or striaght people say that our generation is so cool that we can take over the world of whatever is really annoying when they actively participating jamal 'jokes', daddy issues jokes and ect. this is just showing the privilege they have.
this part of the essay was inspired by @savphobia on tik tok
im probably going to do a prt 2 later but i hoped you enjoyed

this!!!
i feel like the younger queer community online kind of internalized this belief that because they're queer, they can stereotype, repeat homophobic jokes, etc all they want, and while reclamation and joking about your oppressors' narrative is a thing amongst minorities, they seem to not realise how others may not be comfortable with that-- their own community reusing the phrases/stereotypes their oppressors held against them.
i see a similar instance with young queers online with queer label/flag/slur discourse, as alot of them don't know much about queer history and how fluid labels were, how we reclaimed slurs, used flags inspired by other ones, etc. and instead of reading up on their history, they're circling back to fitting themselves and others into neat labelled boxes and applying rules to them.
anywayy sorry for the whole ass rant in ur comments kghdjf im just rlly interested in how the queer community changes and how it's impacted by internet culture!! u have a great point tho n i hope more awareness comes to it esp on modern socials!

THIS!!!! i see so many ppl use slurs that they can 'reclaim' just bc they are part of a minority group but they still use it in a negative way the whole point of reclaiming something is to use it in a postive way like the word 'queer' it is now being used to describe anyone in the lgbtq community

right i see so many people who claim that gender is a social contruct and is fluid but once they see someone who use pronouns other than he/she/they, thats when they have a problem, they claim to be so innovative with their thinking but still like to have boxes to label people in

Cranky Old Witch
I'm old. Early Gen X. Let me tell you that you 'kids today' are smarter on a lot of these issues. Smarter than we were, and WE were smarter than our folks.
Not gonna be perfect and never will. Point is to keep moving FORWARD, and you are doing the RIGHT THING. People get so caught up in talking about what some OTHER group is doing that they seldom turn a critical eye to their own group, so keep at it! Odds are, they'll be more inclined to listen to YOU than some old person whom they think is just harping on them.

I think it's also the fact that other generations aren't open for change, so i appreciate you being so understanding :)
