thoughts on separating art from the artist?

thought this'd make for a fun topic to talk about, plus i'm super curious as to what other people think about it :] (btw im mostly talking about music but other media can fit this convo)

what are your opinions on separating art from the artist? do you think people should or shouldn't continue consuming media from a problematic creator? why?

while i do occasionally listen to artists who've done some questionable stuff, i think that for the most part i'm kinda unable to listen to artists if they've done super messed up stuff or they're just generally an unlikeable person. it's fine if you do! it's just pretty hard for me since music is so personal and you can totally hear it when someone puts a lot of themself into their music, so when they turn out to be awful - it leaves a bad taste in my mouth since i know listening to their music is kind of supporting them, especially on streaming services where they're paid for listens.

what do you think, though? i'd totally love to hear your takes on this! :D

if think separating the art from the artist should be done but I think it can be hard especially if the art is the issue itself. For example, I see a lot of mindless self indulgence fans and to me, I don't even think you can separate the art from the artist because they're both the issue. Personally, I do think it's hard to do so tho, as you said people use music to express themselves to a personal and unfathomable extent which isn't bad its healthy but its hard to do so when the artist is shitty. I try my best to separate the artist from their work if they're a shitty person but sometimes I cant and I just cringe at the things they've done ^_^'

Mozart liked shit jokes
Bing Crosby beat his kids
Both Bruce Springsteen and Ted Nugent use their stage to politicize
J.K. Rowling is outspokenly transphobic
Led Zeppelin are plagiarists

This is off the top of my head.
*sigh*
I 'get it'. It sucks. Especially if you've admired the artist and their work.

Well, we're people. They're people. But due to the value of their art we try to hold them to a higher moral standard, but people are 'messy'.

Maybe more so the artists. I mean, it's often said that genius comes with at least a tinge of madness.

No, that doesn't mean some of the things they do or beliefs they hold are excusable. Ut at some point, you do have divorce your feelings from the artist to enjoy their art.

The tricky part is how to enjoy their art without enriching the artist or contributing to the ideals they hold that you consider to be egregious.
