A little over ten years ago, I had given up nearly ambition of ever starting a band. I was depressed, and in a bad place, although not the worst place I've ever been in physically/ mentally. Regardless, life was rough, and despite having supportive people around I was still certain that that my interest in writing/ recording/ performing music was over.
I had messed around throughout the mid to late 2000's in recording some small scale songs under various artist names such as Over9K, and Victory Time, but those were all done with bad mics, audacity, and little to no knowledge on proper audio mixing. I always had things working shadings me, like never having a full six songs on my acoustic guitar, or enough money to buy a new set. I was also almost always putting ads up on Craigslist attempting to find other like minded individuals to make music with. Never any luck with that though. I was also dealing with that post high school depression by 2009 where all of my buddies had stopped talking to me, so that didn't help my mood either.
With all of that being said, a shit load can change in a little over ten years. I'm way more interested in music than ever before, and have begun investing in actual gear. We've begun publishing music to majorly established services, and garnered our biggest following yet right here on SpaceHey.
And I wish I had some fantastic story about how I got out of those darker times. Well, maybe I do, but the short version of that is: I got REALLY into Twitch Sings while it was still around, and met a fuckton of amazing people during that time. It was really that community that pushed me towards saying, "fuck it, I'm going to write/record the music I've always wanted to."
I always knew I was going to do a band I wanted no one to take seriously, but ultimately decided we were going to be schoolgirls. Then, one night, the magic happened during one of my life streams: what began as me playing an emo parody of the American Dad theme song turned into the riff for "Dad Took My Hentai Stash (Last Night)." I didn't even have a band name yet. I wouldn't have one until I finally published the song.
I began to brainstorm before submitting to my distributor. What would our name be? I entered:
The Young Vulnerable Japanese Girls.
Mel, who was present in the room was just like "UH NO. That could be considered xenophobic."
It absolutely was. I changed it:
The Young Vulnerable Anime Girls.
Completely different now. Not xenophobic or creepy at all. We'd be a massive success with our main demographic being completely normal, functioning, social individuals.
That last bit is not made up in any way.
