Here’s where I’m at.
People think I’ve lost or abandoned my faith. Although I am not surprised I am taken back by just how quick Christian’s turn on someone. From love you to go to hell. From if you need anything to you we’re never saved. From we’re family to silence. I haven’t abandoned my faith. I’ve abandoned the hyper spiritual-super legalistic, western view of God and the church.
Make no mistake, I have been highly critical of American Christianity as of late. It’s become, quite literally, the antithesis of anything remotely resembling Christlike behavior.
But, I don’t say that I’m a Christian anymore. That term has become synonymous with so much of the political and societal nonsense that I want nothing to do with. I’m still entirely drawn to Jesus’ message. It’s staggeringly beautiful to me.
So what does that mean? For me, it means taking serious the Bible and looking at it through different lenses. It means abandoning ANY kind of faith or allegiance to empire or church, It’s means not concerning myself in the affairs of Caesar. It means to channel most of my god-given energies to advocate for those less fortunate and the underprivileged. Which is by definition our clearest mandate as Christ-followers.
It means simply I am turning away from it all. From the modern church. Going back to the drawing board of my faith and starting over.

I'm not a Christian, never was raised as one. And yet I understand exactly what you are talking about with the modern church. It feels like so many people use their faith as a tool, a shield from criticism, and a bludgeon upon others. It's why I've never had any interest in any faith. Nice to hear a different perspective.
Thanks, I was a pastor for 12+ years and for the first couple of years I was a part of the problem, but the more I read the less I saw how jacked up the church really was.
