Fire and Ice (1983 Animated Film)

Fire and Ice is animated fantasy adventure film about an evil queen's son, Nekron, who seems to want more power and be the ruler of all. The story follows Princess Teegra, the daughter of King Jarol of the volcano citadel, who constantly gets kidnapped (lol). A warrior named Larn is also showed in the film, where he tries to rescue Teegra and defeat Nekron with another lone warrior named Darkwolf.

Apparently, rotoscoping was also used in the animation process so very big kudos to them! I've done rotoscoping manually before and it can be very time consuming.

The representations in the film are a bit dated,I mean it is a 1983 film after all, with the stereotypical beautiful damsel in distress in a very skimpy outfit, a man who saves her, etc.

There isn't much character development and everyone is pretty static:

Princess Teegra keeps getting caught multiple times and hasn't learned how to NOT get kidnapped at all (the only useful thing she does is stab an enemy with a dagger but that's pretty much it).

Larn fights enemies and rescues Teegra (but doesn't do much to defeat the ACTUAL enemy??) and there just isn't much substance to his character.

I could honestly write more about every character but I think you already get the point!

The story itself is interesting though, but I also wish there was a tighter plot. For instance, I noticed that Nekron controls people and their weapons if it is being held, but wasn't able to stop a flying arrow. By that logic, Nekron might have been able to be defeated by a flying object being thrown at him. However, he was defeated by Darkwolf slashing him with an axe (which was also a bit weird for me because what then was the purpose of Larn and Teegra, just for love?eye candy? and letting Darkwolf do all the work? lol). Darkwolf is also my favorite character cause he was the only competent one in my opinion hahaha.

But as is, I actually still like this movie! It was entertaining seeing how the story unfolded and I feel like this would be something I'd always remember.

I really love the art style of the film with the painted backgrounds and sketchy outlines on the characters. Everything went well together and gave a very fantasy book feel. The camera effects such as shaking and snow were also very appropriate and enhanced the overall experience.
