No, I don't think he pranked you. But unlike newer social media types, it requires more effort to meet/find people. There really aren't a lot of automatic type notifications.
Groups are pretty dead. Forums aren't very active. Best thing to do is to make a bunch of friends, comment on their bulletins, and post bulletins of your own.
Blogs are not bad either, but not quite as casually active as bulletins.
