Late last month, user @strangek3vin on Tiktok posted a video captioned "THIS is the female gaze" and which he's lip syncing a song in an embarrassed manner and then shifting to a cold gaze into the camera. Some women commenting and duetting his video admitting that this is "the female gaze". Now recently older videos resurfaced of him pretending to abuse his pregnant girlfriend, and people are finally shutting up about him.
But the term "female gaze" really troubled me in this context. For those who are unfamiliar, the term "female gaze" is a feminist film theory that is a response to the male gaze.
The male gaze is depicting women, world, literature, visual arts from a masculine perspective. This presents women as sexual objects disposable to men's pleasures. This has 3 different perspectives: the man behind the camera, male characters within the cinematic representation, and the audience (thats you!).
So what is the female gaze? If the female gaze is the equivalent to the male gaze, what would that even look like? Well, in my opinion, there is no female gaze. There just isn't any equivalence to the male gaze. Even in media targeted towards women, it still features the male gaze and patriarchal ideas.
Now, back to Kevin. As a woman myself, I don't understand the appeal of Kevin. He's balding, he has a pedo stash, and he makes me feel very uncomfortable. The truth is: you can't apply film terminology to real people. Yes, media affects the way we perceive people. But people are applying film terms without even knowing what they mean to say this guy can do f*** me eyes really well. But the truth is, he's just white. People will find any and every way to describe a new genre of attractive men, but it's just another way to say white men. He's literally just some white dude, who by the way, has said some very misogynistic stuff. He recently made fun of a black woman's lips and another black woman's nose because they expressed they didn't understand the hype. Is this the female gaze? A guy so sensitive to any criticism that he immediately goes for women's features, especially targeting black women. His whole brand is "women love me", he's not just a red flag hes a whole tarp.
anyway, my point here is that we shouldn't use film terms in the real world and the female gaze does not exist.
But that's just my opinion. What do you think? Do you believe in a female gaze? what should i talk about next?
