Pokemon Ultra Moon Monolocke! - Ghost Types [Updated: 12/2/22]

I've decided to start a Ultra Moon Monolocke with ghost types recently after some of my friends recommended it!! For those unfamiliar with nuzlocking, or monolocking, here are the rules:

Nuzlocke Rules

In definition, "A Nuzlocke is a Pokémon challenge run, intended to create a unique and more challenging gameplay experience through a set of self-imposed rules." - NuzlockeUniversity. I have decided to add a ton of rules along with the main three (faint=dead, nicknaming, and one per route)

  1. Any Pokemon that faints is considered dead, and must be released or boxed permanently, and cannot be used for the rest of the challenge
  2. A trainer must nickname all pokemon they catch or obtain, as to get attached to it
  3. Only the first wild Pokemon encountered in an area may be caught, and if the trainer fails to catch it, they lose their ability to catch a pokemon in that area
3.a. as I am doing a Monolocke challenge, I can only catch ghost types. I've looked at the catch set for USUM and I've decided that for early game I will allow myself to catch a few more than just 1- so for the first island I may allow myself to get 2 ghost types in one area, just to make sure that it's not easy wiping. Past the first island I may loosen that rule or go back to the strict usual nuzlocke version.
  4. Shiny clause (can catch shinies if encountered no matter what, however added rule: if not ghost type I cannot use them) and dupes clause (no doubles) activated
  5. The nuzlocke officially starts when I get pokeballs.
  6. No overlevelling (aka no going over the totem pokemon limit)
  7. The trainer may only catch the type of pokemon they've chosen (for me: ghost)
  8. Dual typing and evolutional lining meeting that are allowed (ex. I can use rowlet as it evolves into a ghost type)
  9. Wipe clause (I cannot wipe. This is because I'm.. not too great at nuzlockes even though I love doing them, so if I wipe I'm going to allow myself to continue. This is a bit unorthodox however I feel like I need this rule as I would love to complete the game alongside this)

And without further ado: here's the beginning of my first ever Monolocke.

Chapter 1

I start out by deciding to name my character. I like to take creative liberty in my nuzlockes by naming my trainers names other than my own, incase I would like to make a story out of it! At first I go with the name Mona, as Desdemona is a name that I particularly like, however.. "You can't name yourself that word."

... What? I ask my friends and apparently Mona is an italian curse word?? I try again with the name "assbuttface" as a test and.. that goes through for some reason?? SO let me get this straight.. I can name myself assbuttface.. but not Mona, an actual name? Okay game..

I go with Ophelia instead after the Hamlet character.

Now its finally time to start. After getting through a bunch of dialogue and cutscenes, I end up finally being able to pick my starter. Since I've decided that pokemon that evolve into a ghost type are allowed, I pick Rowlet, as its evolution Decidueye becomes a ghost type!

I name my newly added rowlet Poe!

  • Poe (Rowlet, Male, Hasty, Often Lost in Thought, Route 1 [Starter])
With Poe added to the team, I fight Hau really quickly, and then I head up to Mahalo Trail and Plank Bridge to save Nebby. Poe fights some spearow off while my trainer dies (jk lol). After so many cutscenes and even more dialogue (when will it end), I'm finally allowed to get pokeballs (nuzlocke officially starts now!)

I cannot catch anything on route 1 however, so off we go! After a few battles Poe learns peck, and as I keep going I run into two mysterious alien looking figures. They keep talking about auras? And blinding ones? Guess thats gonna be important. Anyways, they just kinda.. walk away so- we continue?

A festival is going on it seems! We find out that the Alola region is made up of four islands. each with a guardian pokemon, the festival seems to be for the guardian pokemon! The main activity is a battle, and me and my rival Hau are going to be the main event. I.. Still only have Poe, so this battle worries me a bit.

Hau sends out Pichu, I of course send out Poe and hit him with a Leafage. It does half damage!! Hau's pichu uses tail whip. I hit it with a tackle and it goes down- now his popplio. Hau's popplio is really easy since Poe is a grass type right now, has leafage, and is one level over on accident- so I throw leafage. This, again, does half damage. Popplio uses water gun, not damaging Poe much at all, so I hit another leafage and take her out. Battle won! Poe grows another level.

Now I was going to stop there, but since that was an underwhelming battle, I think I'm gonna continue.

Hala gives me the Z-Power Ring, which means I can now use the gimmick of this generation!  We are given permission to do the Four Island Challenge, which is quite what it sounds like- travel the four islands to become the Island Challenge Champion. And after more dialogue and even MORE cutscenes, I'm allowed to go home- but those weird alien people show up again talking about even more auras? I mostly played Ultra Sun so.. this is confusing for me. Anyways.

Lillie leads us to the professors lab in the middle of the night, and the lab roars??? Lillie tells us its because he's researching moves.. Okay. We're told theres a pokemon named Rotom, its body made up of something like electricity, which means it can take form in machines. With the new pokedexes though, rotom can enter the pokedex! And there's only a few models where this can happen. We're given that model, and our pokedex becomes sentient.

Professor Kukui sends us to go to the Trainers School to learn the basics of being a pokemon trainer (rude, I've been doing this for years) and we head out. A lunar eclipse happens and oh god the rotom talks dear god i gotta answer it-

Lillie leads me to the Pokemon Center, and by that I mean abandons me to figure out how to get out of the lab area, and makes me run into a trainer on the way, but once I find her I find I'm in Hau'Oli City!! Hopefully I'm able to get an encounter soon!!! nO WAIT THE TAUROS NOOO... I gotta fight this school with ONLY ROWLET... And the teacher has pokemon that can easily beat rowlet.. Dear god.

With this first roadblock, I'm going to end it here. Find out next time if I can beat the trainers school, or if I get stuck!
