Pros and cons of Linux instead of Windows

Pros:

* Updates are less of a hassle. You don't have to update if you don't want to, and you can use your computer while you update. Unlike Windows where you are forced to update and can't use your computer during the process.

* No arbitrary hardware restrictions. I've installed the newest version of Linux Kubuntu and Linux Mint on very old laptops that came originally came with Windows 7. Windows 10 you can pretty much do this but the new Windows 11 installer will block the install if it sees hardware it doesn't like, even some i5 processors it will refuse to install on requring eather hacking to force the install or sticking to Windows 10.

* No TPM or company account required. Again this is not a problem on Windows 10 but to do this with Windows 11 requires hacking.

* No tracking unless you specifically opt in. Not a problem on Windows 10 or 11 if you use the 3rd party app ShutUp10 to disable all that.

* When you update Linux most of your programs in it also update.

* Free! Most Linux distributions are free and open source. This includes Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Kubuntu and many more. Free to use and free for others to make there own Linux distributions with.

Cons:

* Less software support. MS Office is not available and grammar error underlining didn't work for me in alternative programs. No Adobe software but there are alternatives. Some programs require work arounds to get to work right in Linux. Linux does have Wine which allows some Windows programs to run in Linux though. Programs that use Java or Mono should run fine in Windows or Linux. Steam has worked to make Windows games on Linux work much better, but still a lot of game programers focus mostly on Windows.

* Less hardware support. Some computer peripherals don't work or don't work completely in Linux. This is not a problem for basic peripherals like most monitors mouse and keyboards and USB drives.

* Less popular for home or office computers. So people in these positions are more comfortable and knowledgeable with Windows.

when I got my Toshiba Tecra Z40-A I didn't have time to install windows because drivers and updates but with a Linux distro I was able to get it up and running within an hour and then when I had time, I was able to install Windows 8.1 (native os & no driver issues) tho i use a 2016 MacBook Pro (ew butterfly keyboard) now but only for its hardware, installed both windows 10 and macOS

linux is really impossible to use, i have had nothing but struggles with the thing whereas Windows is so plug and play. Also you can disable windows updates, remove windows-brand spyware, and run windows for free with just a little bit of poking

Yes you can dissable the crap in Windows and that's what I have done in my Windows 10 however it does take time to find the hacks to do it. My Windows 10 is now kind of like a cross between Windows 7 and Windows 10. It has the best of both from all the hacking and 3rd party programs like ClassicShell and ShutUp10.

yeah with all this junk i can't really imagine too many uses for linux outside of what windows already has for you

Are you kidding. Linux can be used for so many things. It's great for servers and for IOT. Android which is used on most smarphones is made with Linux. If a company needs to make a custom OS Linux is the way. You can make your own version of Linux for free and sell it or give it away or use it in a new electric device. Any device that needs a OS like an ATM machine or a robo vacuum can use Linux for free. Linux is also used for super computers. It is pretty good for personal computers too though for this purpose it does lack in some areas.

So linux is great for devices with OSes, but for consumer use it is totally outclassed
