Fawkes News 2

Welcome to Fawkes news, a blog of crazy shit I find on the internet and update very very rarely. This is the second blog entry, as the previous got so long that spacehey just wouldn't let me update it any more.

If any of you have ever been on the fence about caring about privacy because you don't feel it affects you, I highly recommend giving this a read. It explains in excruciating detail and with citations how the data that is extracted from you and others is used against you and others.

The united states is really and truly just getting worse, isn't it?
I thought for a really long time that all the trump era nonsense was just reactionary to the events leading up to the 2016 election, with the problems at the US border providing a scary mirror for xenophobes reflecting islamic imigration into europe here, but things just haven't gotten better. The modern day republican party has gone nuts and democratic politicians are only a few feet behind them in the crazy line.
Reading through the rationalwiki news bulletin feels more and more like I'm being clobbered every day.

Since when are there yellow checkmarks on twitter? I feel so out of the loop. (a fact I discovered while reading this.)

Also I'm getting tired of AI again. I thought it was overhyped when the whole ordeal was starting up a few months ago, got interested when people started open sourcing models, and now I'm back to being bored with it, but with a side of pessimism about where the future will bring us.
I think I'll get back to being interested in it when competent language models get open sourced, but rn that's the secret sauce of the industry, so I doubt it's happening soon.

Feb 11, 2023:

I was reading this and it appeared to be a pretty disinteresting biography until I got to the line "Fuller was a serial philanderer, though he remained married to Hewlett until the end of both their lives in 1983. (He apparently willed himself into a fatal cardiac arrest while she lay unconscious in a hospital out of fear that she was 'worried to go' without him.)" THEY JUST MENTIONED THAT HE "willed himself into a fatal cardiac arrest" AND THEN THEY MOVE ON.

Feb 09, 2023:

All the worst things I read on any given day are the actions of regular ole police officers.
Also want to know some fun trivia? If a police officer shoots your dog, they don't call it murder, they call it destruction of property. Just look at the language they use to navigate around the fact that someone's pet got shot. (image from here.)

People writing shit like this as if monero doesn't already exist is so fucking funny to me.

Fuck it, camping resources (for the united states):
forest service sites https://www.fs.usda.gov/ivm/
park service sites https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/maps.htm
Bureau of Land Management https://webmaps.blm.gov/program_apps/BLM_Natl_Recreation_Opportunities/

https://www.campsitereservations.com/
https://web.archive.org/web/20210804100326/https://www.ultimatecampgrounds.com/index.php/products/full-map
https://www.theoutbound.com/ and https://www.alltrails.com/ mostly show hiking trails and lodging, but might be useful as a bridge to a google search for "x location camping"
https://www.recreation.gov/ (some sites listed here have to be reserved at reserveamerica.com)
Google maps searches for national forest, national park, state park, dispersed camping, and primitive camp sites
Look for a state park website similar to https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/parks-map/
https://archive.org/details/inlibrary and search for [name of state] atlas, and then find a book similar to https://archive.org/details/campersguidetote0000litt
Also while you're on archive.or, try a search for the Delorme atlas & gazatteer.
https://www.hipcamp.com/en-US and https://koa.com/ have private camp grounds if you're into that

I find it hilarious how this article says "Wiener did not immediately respond to a request for comment." I'd like to imagine there is a strong emphasis on immediately and that they gave the guy like 15 min to respond to an email before publishing the article.

Jan 25, 2023:

From Robocast v. Youtube,
"Defendants are ORDERED to identify the lawyer responsible for this motion. The lawyer, by January 3, 2023, is ORDERED to submit an explanation of why the lawyer thought this was a justified motion. When I see the explanation, I will consider whether subsequent proceedings are appropriate."

This is the closest thing a court room has to this scene.

Jan 19, 2023:

The headline of this article focuses on the pay of 3rd world workers, but I found it's description of the psychological aspect of the torture it takes to build an AI so much more horrifying.

EFF's year in review is a really long but really good read.

Finally, an excerpt from this article,
"When the Chinese government ordered Apple to remove working VPNs from the App Store, Apple complied.  When the Chinese government ordered Apple to install backdoors in its cloud backup service, Apple complied.  When the Chinese government ordered Apple to break AirDrop so it couldn’t be used to organize anti-government demonstrations, Apple complied. On the other hand, when the FBI ordered Apple to add backdoors to its devices, Apple refused - and rightly so. "

The music playing in the airport rn sounds like someone is trying to play christmas music but all they have is a midi keyboard that makes pipe organ sounds and a sax.

Jan 02, 2023:

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS PLOT?
THIS IS LITERALLY FUCKING LOVECRAFTIAN HORROR BAKED INTO AN ANIME SLICE OF LIFE ???????
All the side characters are literally agents with the sole purpose of keeping the main character entertained so that she doesn't simply lose interest in maintaining the fabric of reality. This is like if Jason gained consciousness and realized that he has to continue being a character in my life or else he'd stop existing because reality is an outward projection of mine.

Hang em high is one of the most insane movies I have ever watched. I am legit unsure if the part of the movie I am watching is a hallucination/dream or an event happening in the plot.
This is like apocalypse now but a western with a romance predicated upon the objectification of women.

Dec 23, 2022:

I only just caught up with all of my news since the election cycle, so here's your drug news.
In the cringe category,
North Dakota, South Dakota, & Arkansas voted no to Cannabis legalization.
California voted yes to keeping their flavored tobacco ban.
Oregon previously voted yes to allowing the consumption of psilocybin under supervision, but is having a hard time getting the ball rolling on the "psilocybin service centers" that are core to the plan. The state, despite decriminalising posession of basically every drug is also threatening to crack down hard on flavored tobacco of all things.
Biden is still being an ass about federal weed reform and congress only just passed the first ever federal law that would make it easier to obtain weed(, but only for research lmao).

In the based category,
Oregon, despite it's two other cringes recently is pardoning all possession offenses.
Maryland Becomes the 20th State To Legalize Recreational Marijuana and Missouri the 21st
Colorado Voters Approve Decriminalization of 5 Natural Psychedelics.
A really interesting report on how Washington State is doing really well in displacing the black market for legal drugs where other states fail.

Dec 22, 2022:

Crypto investors L again. I am a big proponent of crypto and I think it's the future, but I also think that 99% of all crypto ventures are awful and the only way things will get better is when all the morons get burnt badly enough that they stop trusting the same very types of actors who cause trouble in regular finance.

Dec 16, 2022:

Biden is talking big shit about guns rn. I feel like he's just trying to piss off the courts atp.

Dec 15, 2022:

Every now and then the publication I rely on for court news goes way out of my depth and I'm just left reading like "what the fuck does this mean?" Like I get the big picture but couldn't put all the pieces together if I had to explain this to someone else.

Dec 14, 2022:

Poll: Would you all prefer the current format where I add about one article per day when I update fawkes news, even though I'm really just lying about what got published on which date, or would you prefer that when I update fawkes news I just put the date of the update and dump everything in one section? I feel the former makes the blog more comprehensible as a whole, but the latter would make it easier to come and go and know where you actually are in terms of new posts.

This is awful news. CRYPTO SHOULD NEVER BE AN INVESTMENT. Fuck the scum who want to centralize crypto and it's institutions. The crypto space makes me so sad because we had such an opportunity and then braindead "investors" allowed themselves to become the perfect bait for scammers. I celebrate every crashing token because those that remain at the end will be the tokens that can actually stand on their own two feet.

Nov 09, 2022:

(This message is from when I got a whole bunch of entries done in one day and hit spacehey's max post length, so it didn't end up getting posted till Nov 28 because I've been too busy to play that game of catch up a second time.)

Everything from Sep 27 onward (between both blog entries) is new with this post.

It's been a while, hasn't it. I've missed doing this, but it took me a really long time to get back into a normal schedule after moving to Cyprus for the semester abroad I'm currently doing. This would have come out faster, but I decided that I wanted to read through my entire news feed for the time I was absent to fill you all in, and that took a REALLY REALLY LONG TIME. Makes me sad that I don't have more hours in the day, as in the long term, this sort of reblogging that I do is kinda unsustainable.

Anyway, life's good, I'm happy. Hopefully the news will be more regular till I leave for the United States again at least.

This article spends a whole bunch of time basically pointing out the issue of people deliberately giving kids THC candy is basically unsubstantiated, but I spent the whole time wondering why it would be a crazy huge concern in the first place. The US prison system is legitimately one of the most despicable institutions in modern America. Also, that capsule is most likely clindamycin or amphetamine-dextroamphetamine. It's hard to tell since the imprint cannot be clearly seen.

they clearly mention monero as being a security focused coin in the article. i imagine they are focusing on this fella moreso as an example of a more secretive coin to talk about the concerns governments have of such coins and their progression as new ones arise, and less so to cover the darkfi coin itself.

Report Comment

Monero is only mentioned once, near the bottom, which I'd call the opening of the article ignoring it. Bait and switch to keep you engaged. Also they mention monero only to immediately dismiss it because the new darkfi will have "perfect blockchain systems that integrate next-generation functionality and secrecy in a single system," or "ones that will allow people to form organizations that collectively raise and distribute money in total secrecy." Notice they don't mention those features by name because they're not real. The only instance of monero being mentioned is to pretend it doesn't have capabilities it does and I stand by my initial assessment.

concerning the crypto L,

i agree that it is a wicked neat possibly future replacement to currency, assuming the coin(s) are implemented with specific attributes, but the part that always gets me apprehensive is how instead of a currency with certain features, it is often used by people as an investment platform. the very idea of holding your coins in a central place (dare i say a bank?) defeats the whole purpose i feel, and the reason they keep it on these exchanges is because that's how it becomes convenient to trade.

the whole culture around crypto is lame and wrong, long story short.

I know I'm late (October 13th -> December 28th) but what do you think of the German prison system?

Report Comment

From a completely absolute perspective, any carceral system is still immoral. From a relative view, yeah they seem like better prisons.
