Bombed a test. Anybody have good studying tips?

So far until now, Chemistry has been a breeze for me. Most of the topics in my class have some elements I'm already familiar with, so I never really need to study. Unfortunately, the latest topic on the test was something I didn't understand at all. And so, I'm pretty sure I got at best a C. I want to get a high B or better when I retake it since I need as many high grades I can get to raise my GPA.

Anybody know good ways to learn things? Or gathering reliable sources of information? Hell, even recommending me a book would be fine. Any knowledge-retaining method is okay for me. I don't believe in a set learning style. As long as it's engaging, I'm game.

Oh and don't suggest flashcards please. Those things are the bane of my existence…
