took me a while to post this, sorry
WSM - first act
I don't remember much of this part, to be fair. My nerves jittering from my first small gig alone made everything buzz. I had listened to some of their music in preparation and they sound very true to that! Never Enough was the title I recognized immediately from hearing it, its electric live. Guitarist had some very cool technique with using a metal bar to create a whiny, glassy sound. Drummer was sick (positively). Singer was, of course, on tone and in tune with the audience. His french accent on english lyrics is a little more obvious in person but honestly I find accents in music charming. :)
Bicurious - second act
WOW. I loved these guys. They have incredible energy onstage and great music. Absolute whiplash going into the set hearing trump's voice clipped around to say "I am the worst president ever" with a sick riff on top. About halfway through the set I looked down at my phone after taking some pictures and felt something hit my hair. The song ends and the guy next to me taps me on the shoulder, apparently it was half a drumstick??? Gav, the drummer of the duo snapped it while playing. More songs played, really energetic! Taran, the guitarist, climbed the tallest amp and the drummer ran through the crowd, with his snare, up to the balcony. They finished the final song from these vantage points! I waggled the broken stick at Gav and he gave me a kind of amused face and a pat on the hand. My review is probably biased from interaction, but I thought they were great before then anyway. :D
White Hills - third act
I try not to judge acts I don't know very harshly, because some things just aren't my scene, but I was uncomfortable pretty quick. A member snorted something during set-up, to the confusion of the people next to me. We hadn't spoken much, but turned to each other and gave wide eyed stares, as a silent way of saying "wtf?" I was pushed close up front and my knees were digging into the stage. Maybe that had to do with some of my discomfort. The set started, fog machine making the air thick, and so on. Not a memorable intro for me, but the guitarist makes a lot of eye contact and strange expressions. The drummer was kind of hidden for me (I was right behind her kit), though when I squeezed myself away, I saw she was doing hair flips, and tensing, grinding her jaw. The songs seemed to go on forever, droning, repetitive music that sat on top of my skin like soap film. I'm sure they felt like rock stars, but I liked it better from the back where it was drowned out by happy conversation and drinks.
I think I left before their last couple songs. Checked directions, and saw Gav outside. Ended up getting stuck with a bus an extra 45 minutes late for some reason, but it was a small trade for such a nice night. :)
I'll definitely go back again sometime- fat chance, but if you're also from the parisian region and interesting in meeting up for one of these, shoot me a message ^^
