the elon musk thing is pretty funny. i'm most active on twitter, but i'm very glad to see it collapse. there has been a lot of talk about "places of refuge", where to find your friends when musk takes a hatchet to the servers and ends things once and for all. here's my opinions on the main options
mastodon: twitter but for people who have a favorite linux distro. the "federation" thing is kind of cool but i imagine it'll become a massive pita as time goes on. seems antithetical to funny posters
tumblr: i had a tumblr account when i was 12 and it never latched onto me. i tried again a few years later and was just left alienated. i love the posters that come out of it, but actually using tumblr is an exercise in futility. you still can't post porn
cohost: basically just mastodon and tumblr combined. its new and so i don't really have any opinions on it, but i can see this as the most likely to gain a foothold. probably gonna have a lot of cory doctorow-types.
the something awful forums: i paid 10bux a few weeks back and honestly if you don't mind being in a community mostly made of gen x'ers it is not a bad place to be
spacehey: full of 15 year olds with names like xander and kai. not a fan

SomethingAwful and then it's bastard child 4chan used to be the biggest power coming out of the internet till like 2017-18. Possibly still.
somethingawful died in like 2014 but its corpse is a pretty cool place free of insane weirdos who i have to assume are all on 12chan or whatever
