Words to Remember When You Wake

In the First Age, before the world was called Aludel, and before the lands united in ringing harmony, the world was covered by the sea. It was a deep water, chaotic and vibrant, and stretching to the furthest lands without end. Njid saw the water and marveled at it's beauty, allowing the flowing life of the planet to glide along her scaled body, cold and fresh and new, as she swam among the dancing rays.

She could not resist the temptation to swim close to the surface, where the light danced most joyfully. Again and again she swam towards the light, closer and closer each time. The mystery of what lay beyond, what wonderful sights she would see beyond the distorted window of the water's surface, was irresistibly attractive to her. The source of the light beckoned, time and time again, and Njid would answer.

Finally, one day, it called her beyond. She swam, up and up, faster and faster. The water slid across her scaly skin with ease, and weaved playfully through her hair. She broke through the surface and was overwhelmed by the pleasant sensations of the sun and air.

Each of us begins life under the water. We are content, pleased with the easy slickness of our daily lives. The scales we grow help us to navigate the world. They are a natural part of us, insofar as we continue to exist in the state we were born in.

Change is frightening, often. When I was discovering what it meant to be human, and what it meant to be me as a unique, wholly self-determined creature, I resisted many of the changes happening in my mind and to my body. At first, as I grew, the physicality of life weighed on me. I disliked my body, I disliked how it was expected to be used. I disliked how difficult it was to escape it. So when I began to think, and reflect on my existence, I began to see the flaws in the world that I lived in. It was too dark and cold, and what little dancing joys I held onto were muddied parodies of what surely lay above the surface.

What warmth! What beauty! The sky seemed to sing with color and grace, its endless patterns stretching as far as the sea did. Njid felt the sun's rays bury beneath her scales and tickle her skin. A cool breeze undercut the warmth and began to peel the scales from her body. The scales spun and flickered in the light, dancing in intricate patterns as they settled again in the water. Soon they became solid land, strewing islands across the sea, and radiating Njid's wonder throughout the world. And these became the Habité of the First Age, the Age when Men lived in paradise with the world.

There is an indescribable wonder in waking up. Suddenly the whole world, its histories and nuance, its peoples and all forms of life are open to you. Good and evil become simple natural forces, opposed but morally unaligned with traditional notions. The power of the natural world is given to you, and where belief is strong you will not falter. There is darkness, certainly, but there is a beauty in the darkness knowing that it exists in contrast with an equal measure of light. All things become tolerable, should you so choose to tolerate them. You obtain a god-like control over your own destiny. Your place in the universe is clear, as is your life path.

It is not possible to divine or control the future wills of your fellow man. There is no need - whatever happens to you is by your own choosing and yours alone, as the universe inevitably reacts to all of your choices. Even death, a defeat, or falling short of a goal is a victory, so long as you commit to the path in your heart.

Many will misunderstand. Many will receive the wrong message, and go about their days in the darkness of the deep, enacting malice upon their fellow ocean-dwellers. But the words will stay with them when they surface, and guide them towards a fuller understanding of the universe and the human mind.

Addendum: In the creation of sigils and charms I have been successful. They are not 'magic,' as in many fantasy works. They are merely a part of the daily ritual of strengthening my faith, which is ever faltering as humans are prone to do. It is in the comforting and peace that the ritual brings that they find their power.
