the meaning of halloween to me...

... is sonic the hedgehog, mostly.

im brazillian which means that we dont traditionally celebrate halloween. its actual introduction as a holiday is way too recent, like only-past-decade recent, if its even an actual holiday here yet. its possible we just celebrate it in spirit. that being said, i have ALWAYS had a really deep connection with halloween, since i was a child, and i think sonic has a lot to do with that.

sonic has been a part of my life since i was literally a baby - perhaps even just one year old! - and the franchise has also always had a connection to the spooky season. its probably because historically the franchise has been the cool edge of gaming. so even when i was a wee little baby, halloween was barely a thing here yet, i was always fascinated by the holiday. i remember when i was younger and mystic mansion and hang castle were the coolest things to me, and seeing all the halloween sonic fanart definetly did something in my taste in art, probably. i was never really into the tails doll mythos, though...

that being said, i was ALWAYS - and still am - a massive fan of the boos, and especially the sonic x episode that features them. (or the two episodes that feature them, but season 3 with cosmo was not part of my childhood.)

the most common opinion on this episode is that its creepy and scared people shitless when they were children but that was never really the case for me. this was actually the episode i rewatched the most on our sonic x DVD collections, and the boos always fascinated me. im not sure why? i guess growing up surrounded by sega in general molded my tastes in character design in a way that the boos fit right in. also, boo amy fucking ruled. i wish that was a real super form of hers. shes already connected to the occult because she knows tarot and stuff, so i dont see why sega wouldnt capitalize on it...
aside from that, though? well i do still like halloween. but outside of the sonic franchise it really doesnt have that big of an impact on me, seeing people say "HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!" here on spacehey just leaves me with a feeling of meh. i love celebrating halloween (and christmas!) with the sonic franchise by watching old AMVs and scouting through fanart from the early 2000s (internet archeology is a hobby of mine), but like. we dont have the same houses americans have, which makes trick or treating almost impossible, and nobody really decorates their houses in general outside of some christmas lights when december comes.
so like, halloweens a 7/10 for me. its 10/10 when sonic is involved though.
