While doing research on morning routines, I suddenly remembered this screenshot from an anime movie called Is the Order a Rabbit??: Dear My Sister. By the way, Is the Order a Rabbit is an amazingly cute anime. This screenshot shows Rize Tedeza showing a schedule that she made for other characters.
I remember when I saw this schedule, I was like, “I do not want to go through this schedule.” I disliked how exercise is before breakfast, and there’s only one hour of free time. Given that her father has been in the military and he’s her biggest influence, this schedule is understandably tough.
But then, considering how I usually wake up not hungry, exercise before breakfast does not seem like a bad idea. A video I watched on Thomas Frank’s morning routine suggests that exercise before breakfast is good. He does pull-ups and goes for a walk before he makes and eats breakfast. I also found one of my old morning routines, where I would drink some water, play Taiko on the Wii U, take a shower, shave (if I need to), eat breakfast (Bread with Olive Oil and Salt), brush my teeth, and determine what needs to get done today. Ideally, it should take about 2-3 hours.
Back to Rize’s schedule. Looking at it more closely, from 9-18 (9AM-6PM), there’s a 1-hour lunch break, and all the activities are replaced with training/study and reading/cleaning. On weekdays, I work from 9-6, and ideally, I’d want to focus on either work or gaining new skills. As for the 12PM lunch break, ideally, the lunch break should be flexible. It should last 30 minutes-1 hour and should start at any time from 12PM to 2PM. I know that 2PM is kind of late for lunch, but if I have continuous meetings at 12PM and 1PM, then I have no choice but to have a 2PM lunch. Assuming that there are breaks, I’d like to use that time to check Twitter.
After 6PM, there are four tasks: Dinner, bathing/stretching, free time, and self-reflection/bedtime prep. Dinner comes immediately after work, which I think is good. Spending 1 hour for bathing/stretching seems like a lot of time. Ideally, I’d move bathing/stretching to the morning. More specifically, after breakfast and before working. We can lose an hour of morning exercise. That way, there can be two hours of free time. Here’s a list of things I can do in my free time.
- Watch anime
- Relax/meditate
- Digitize journal
- Make blog posts (though that can take a while)
- Play video games
- Watch YouTube videos
- Watch the latest subscriptions
- Watch life advice videos
- Watch whatever shows up in autoplay
- Check Twitter
- Update budget spreadsheet
- Organize digital music library
- Call friends
- Work on personal projects
- Be lazy and unproductive
There are a lot of things I can do, but if we’re following my revision of Rize’s schedule for the weekdays, I only have two hours. With the weekends (Specifically, Saturdays), I have three options since I have much more free time. I can A: Have a well-earned lazy, unproductive day, B: Go outside and have some fun or C: Focus more on self-development during the times when I would normally work on the weekdays.
The last part of the schedule before bedtime involves self-reflection/bedtime prep. While I currently don’t do this, if I were to do it, I would write in my journal about the things that have happened and then listen to a guided meditation to get me to fall asleep. I’ve been staying up past midnight multiple times, and I desire to go to sleep earlier so that I have more time to do my daily routine.
With that in mind, here is my ideal weekday schedule after I get my sleep schedule fixed.
- 6:00AM Wake up, drink water, Head to Work
- 12:00PM/1:00PM/2:00PM Lunch break. Now would be a good time to check YouTube/Twitter and practice meditation
- 1:00PM/2:00PM/3:00PM Back to work
- 6:00PM Dinner, brush teeth
- 7:00PM Free time
- 9:00PM Write in my journal, prepare to go to bed
- 10:00PM Bedtime
Overall, I find Rize’s schedule to be OK. It has some good intentions, but it is flawed. I made some revisions to the schedule to fit my needs, goals, and lifestyle. And while this schedule feels lofty, I should make small adjustments to my life to advance myself into this weekday routine, which I will inevitably change to make it better suit my needs.
