Romancing a fucking moth

James stared aimlessly out the window, the feeling of dread ripping him apart at the seams, his mind grasping for any escape from its own thoughts. His family had moved him away from so much, and yet he couldn’t say anything about it. He knew it wasn’t his mother’s fault that they were kicked out, it wasn’t her fault they only had two weeks to find somewhere to live, and it wasn’t her fault his dead aunt lived an hour's drive from his town, but fuck, he had never felt more helpless in his life.

The time had come, he felt his face go cold as he peered out to his new home, it reeked of the middle class, something James was not used to. It was weird as he looked about his new street not to see any broken glass and he almost missed how the dead, brown ground splattered with Jack Daniel’s looked every time he walked by on his way to school. He grabbed his bag and the cat carrier his poor darling Ludo was in and walked into the house as his mother rushed behind him with some blankets and Ludo’s portable kitty litter box. The house was nothing remarkable, a bit older than his last one, but then he saw it, the backyard.

The backyard was filled with beautiful tall grass, wildflowers and weeds grew without any restriction. It stretched for miles and miles with every single part having a magical beauty that mere text could not convey being too artificial compared to this display of gods masterpiece, and James was without words as he watched the suns rays flicker between the long strands of grass as the wind ran through it in an almost mystical way, almost like it had noticed his presence and wanted to introduce itself. Ludo was meowing now in discontent but James could barely hear his pleas for freedom, becoming more lost in the sight that lay before him, before a quick tap on the shoulder by his mother took him immediately out

“You good? Let the poor cat out before you watch the grass you fuckin weirdo,” said mum, James could sense a slight judgement in her tone “The blankets and that are all in your room, just stay in there and let dad do all the unpacking, make sure Ludo is okay”

“Fuck, sorry mum, I’ll go there now, I guess I’m just not used to seeing a backyard like that, ours was just concrete and…sadness” James joked back while following his mother to his new room.

James breathed out heavily, struggling to keep his eyes open while laying on the floor with Ludo, he hadn’t eaten all day since his mum had forgotten to pick him up snacks and it was now 8 pm, and his dad had been moving about all day, James could hear him, but he had left around 5 pm after the last box was placed down to give his mother company at her new job at the pub. Now here he was, not internet, no data, just the Sims 4 and his little lad Ludo. However, his lethargy had worn him out right quick and the sims seemed almost like a chore, so now he was just left with his thoughts, something James always fucking hated to be left alone with, a mindfuck of self-hatred and regret, he just wanted Maccas and a sleep. James sighed and looked outside, he could see an outline of trees, but just barely with the night covering any specifics, well other than that red thing. ‘Those… TWO red things actually…. how peculiar’ James thought to himself, it’s almost like he was being watched. A shiver went down his spine as his heart quickened. ‘It’s watching me, it knows, I’m going to die.’ those thoughts ran around his mind, and he looked away from the red dots as he tried to calm himself down, the paranoia running through him as if it was a part of him, not just a thought but his whole being, his reason was gone as well, ‘it’s inside, it’s outside my door I swear it” his eye immediately looked to the doorknob it almost felt as if his brain was pleading for it to turn, but it remained still.

James then heard the front door open, and before his blood could reach freezing he heard the faint murmur of his mother. He let out a breathy sigh, feeling ashamed for how he acted, yet the red eyes were gone, he knew he didn’t imagine them. He bolted out of the room to his mum, he felt childish for acting like that but he felt safe with her, safer than he ever could feel in this alien house, he remained by her side for the rest of the evening, Maccas had never tasted better than it had at that moment, but as the time ticked by he knew he had to return back to his sad mattress on the floor, and the eyes.

He was hesitant of course, he couldn’t fall asleep for hours, just looking out the window for any trace of the red glow he had seen before, but he saw nothing and soon his fight with sleep had lost and he was out.

The sun washed over his walls, and the soft burn of the heat ran over his skin as he yawned, he felt silly for being so grateful that he didn’t die in the night but instead greeted by the safety of the sun, he looked outside, now the woods didn’t seem so frightening but beautiful. James’s eyes then looked at the window sill where a single flower lays, it didn’t look to be one of the wildflowers in the backyard but a red rose, a part of him felt as if it was an apology, as if the red eyes had seen his horror and tried to ease him, but the logical part of his brain was not letting that reasoning be feasible, ‘it was a bird or something, I had no reason to be scared

Oh, but he did.
