squid(s) of the day: joubin's squid and the piglet squid

thought these squids would go well together for a double blog.. they're both as mysterious as they are freaky looking!

joubin's squid is a skinny little dude with a mantle length of about 10cm. they're largely unknown, living at depths of about 2000m underwater. it's skinny tentacles are covered with suckers which are believed to ensnare small prey. cheeky critters

the piglet squid lives in much shallower areas, varying at a depth from 1m-1km in both tropical and polar regions. weirdly, the "snout" of the squid is actually a little siphon which regulates chemicals within its body in order to stay bouyant. for unknown reasons, these dudes choose to swim upside down, making its tentacles look more like hair!
