squid of the day: humboldt squid

unlike the other squids on my blog, these dudes are huge! also known as the jumbo squid, the humboldt squid can grow to 1.5 meters and are known to be one of the only actively aggressive squid species. i find them incredibly interesting because of how they can communicate with eachother by changing colours rapidly. they can vary from a pale grey to a bright red, pictured below.



the extent of their intelligence hasn't yet been fully discovered - however it's estimated that they have about 500 million neurons, which is about the same as a dog's!
