The Cockatiel
Native to Australia, the cockatiel can live up to 10-14 years in the wild. In captivity, though, they can manage up to 15-25, the oldest cockatiel even living to 36 years! They usually live in wooded areas, close to fresh water that they can frequently drink from. Cockatiels are herbivores, eating grain, seed and plants.
When cockatiels first hatch, they bond to the first thing they see. This is a good reason why cockatiels are commonly found as pets, since they easily bond with owner. They are good at mimicking sounds such as whistling and even speech. Males are typically better at making these sounds, using them to attract females in the wild. Cockatiels will also use their crest atop their head to communicate. You can often tell if a cockatiel is scared, alert, relaxed and more just by looking at their crest.
Cockatiels are of the "least concern" when it comes to their endangerment level, which is very good news! Its population remains stable as of today and is not at risk of extinction.
