Loggerhead Shrike

Loggerhead Shrike

The Loggerhead Shrike is a deadly songbird, found commonly in open woodlands in North America. It is given the nickname "Butcher Bird" due to its violent nature, where the shrike will impale its prey on barbed wire, branches and thorns. It is able to achieve a smooth kill with its hooked bill, using it to quickly sink into its prey and disable them. Once their food is skewered, they will save most of it for later.

The loggerhead shrike is near threatened to endangered, with its population size decreasing 76% from 1966 to 2015. This is thought to be caused by the introduction of pesticides in the United States. Thankfully, with the help of predator control and habitat conservation, this bird's population is steadily recovering.
