The Brutal Digital Age - Art block and Social Media

The Brutal Digital Age

I don't know how anyone creates enough stuff to stay relevant online. People say that you need to upload every 3 days on Instagram or else you'll lose visibility. As far as I can tell, that's generous. You also lose followers.
After 2 grueling years of effort, I've finally made it too 1000 followers but at what cost? I follow over 600 people who I barely know. All of whom would unfollow if I fell behind.
In the viral age, time seems to be speeding up. Art is valued on immediate impact and is called "content". Creation has been monetized and if you aren't good enough at something we believe you shouldn't create at all. I hate that.
I tell myself "I'm done prioritizing the algorithm over my well being. I have mental illnesses and childhood trauma to worry about." but here I am, worrying. I guess it's time I took a break.
So I sit here, watching my follower count slowly tick down. I stress about all the progress I'm losing. I think about all the people spending hours trying to catch up like I did for 2 years. Uploading regularly as if running into a coliseum. Taking on their mutuals posts like gladiators. For some people its fun. They like the competition, the challenge of endurance. For me, it's all too brutal.
