So yesterday I was watching TV and our Mayor in a celebration honored a well known entertainer with the Keys to the City. As I watched this go down, I got to thinking, what is so special about the Key to our City and this Key in particular ? What mysterious door does it open and what lies behind this door ?
Could it be a door that opens up to a wine cellar with lavishing women so one can party 24/7 ? Or maybe a door that holds treasures and universal truths ?
But, all kidding aside, if the Key to the City sort of sparks your interest and you are curious as to what this celebration is all about. Here is the answer ..,
It’s a medieval tradition meant to confer trust and honor. The idea stems from the notion, that in medieval times a walled city and its gates were guarded day and night. So if you were given this honor, to possess the Key to the City, it symbolized the freedom to enter and leave the city at will at anytime.
So yeah, it’s obvious this ceremony is now a mere tradition. Because with all the air traffic backups, traffic mayhem and the like, it’s tough to get in and out if our city with even the Key to the City
