NICU Life: An unending cycle.

You've been awake since 5:30am.
You work a labor intensive job
Your new mother had been sitting home,  anxious to see her baby
all day while you were working.
You get home at 5:00pm and she's pumping.
You're exhausted from the unending cycle.
But she is dealing with her own cycle.
Pumping every 2-3 hours.
She does not get a full night sleep.
Her life force is being sucked from her.
She cleans the parts and you know what's next.
"Ready to head out?"
Your hungry, You can smell your self
You haven't stopped but to eat all day.
You put it all aside.
"Yup!"
You grab your NICU badge and mask.
Quickly slip in a face wash before leaving.
 Phone obsessed drivers.
Speed Racers.
Gas pedal's on the right dumbass!
You arrive at the hospital
All the days struggles wash away,
when you get into her room.
Shes but 3lbs.
Puts a weight like no other on your chest.
The daily update lifts your spirits way up.
The nurse cautions of the high highs
And low lows.
Its 9:30pm now.
Time to go home.
You can't keep affording the fast food gambit.
COVID-19 compliance closes everything at 10.
Its 10:20pm now.
Finally home.
You begin making dinner.
Spaghetti And Meat Sauce.
The apartment is dark.
You eat in silence.
She has to pump again in 20 minutes.
You are running out of time to sleep.
Now its 11:30pm.
There's never enough time.
I'll shower in the morning.

"FUCK"
Its 6:30am.
I'll shower when I get home.

This was intense for me, my family has a lot of small, sometimes sickly babies, myself being both. But the babies born in this Pandemic sometimes possibly have to survive through scary things.

And then that work cycle and family dynamic. That's so rough on people. Humans are social, they need time with their families especially and the work hours are killin essential workers.

My daughter was born 6 weeks early and weighed 3lb 4oz, she'll now be 10 in March and she so bright and clever you'd would never know she's a NICU warrior, it's hard and scary as I was terrified when she was in intensive care but they're so strong and your little one will surprise you with the strength she carries
