however long ago i made a blog post excited about tfb's new ep! originally i had thought they were going back to their old sound in a way because "more than it hurts you" and "hello world" both sounded like their earlier sort of music but also like "in sickness & in flames" in a way, idk. either way i thought it was gonna be a classic tfb woman ep (like "rose" and "ann") but after listening to it i'm kind of dissapointed?
i love "more than it hurts you" and "hello world" of course, it makes sense why they were released as singles because they're clearly the highlights of the ep. but the three new songs, "the bongo song", "the supply of power" and "the winds", were not as good as i'd hoped for.
"the bongo song" was decent! i'm glad there were bongos in the song, and i was a fan of the lyrics, but the song in general was just above mid, it was like a low b tier song.
"the supply of power" i actually really liked and have added it to my main playlist! the la-la-las were fun and the actual lyrics were good and i'm a fan of the build up to the big music! the music is genuinely very good, it's 100% a song you have to listen to with the volume way up and just get absorbed into Brain Sella's voice and music <3
and finally "the winds" was alright but not my favourite. it was the closest to the two singles but didn't hit the same, and the part where he just repeated the same line but changed the number to count up to ten ("2 questions i'll never know the answer, 3 qs"... etc) irked me so much lmao it was unnecessary. but i'll give them this, TFB always have great outro songs on their eps/albums - take "Ocean" or "Make Way" for example. they're just very good at ending their stuff with a sort of closure and i love that.
all in all, i'm not as overjoyed as i thought i'd be with the new songs, but i'm never gonna complain about getting new tfb music because i love them so much and have yet to ever dislike a song they're made! of course i have my preferences, music is the most subjective art form and everyone likes different stuff, but i truly thing that The Front Bottoms are one of the greatest bands of our time.
