The oddity of the time we live...
Places like these quite parts of the NewWeb is a rarity and a reflection of the strange times we live in.
In a world where thinks can seem sometimes, quite frankly dear reader, insane, but finding places like these where you can get away from the deep abyss of the algorithm and loud buzz of the NewWeb horror of the hour is a blessing and sometimes a sad reminder of times we have lost.
I, dear reader, was a young in 2000, experienced and remember a world before technology was available to the masses. I've seen and remember when VCRs could finally record shows off TV, when the first flip cellphones will a lil antenna that lights up when extended, with a tiny screen resembling a tiny calculator.
Sony Ericsson cellphones, mix tapes I even remember but I was quite young in this lif- *cough* . Ah and CDs, I was all about those type of physical media, burning mixed CDs to play on your CD walkmans, some skipped if you didn't have jump protection, ipods and various mp3 players, the aray of different types cellphones.
The amount of cellphone design variety just was amazing back them after tell ya. (β‘ Ο β‘)
Along side computers and gaming just advancing so fast....suddenly ipods, blackberry and android jumped on the scene and I felt someone just started to really step down on the brakes and I'm now recovering from that whiplash.
The Algorithm.
Social Media....
Ok don't get me wrong. There was a sweet spot in social media, and im always blessed I was a young adult when I experienced it. I was on VampireFreaks in it's prime, Myspace during it's Emo/Scene domination, GaiaOnline before the economy was destroyed ΰ² _ΰ² .....
...where did the time go?
As one who isn't even "old" theoretically speaking, I feel like it quite frankly.
At my age, It's so hard to articulate how I feel like I have said,Β suddenly recovered from whiplash, as I now waking up this bizarre world where I never expected technology to take us here. It is strange and underworldly sometimes.
Also quote worrying, scary, overwhelming, disgusting, perverse,, disappointed, soul shattering...
One might say, "heh, that's life my dood".
I mean ya true. I would agree...if it was 2009....
In this current timeline....it the feeling of the despair of loosing your last ounce of faith for humanity itself and just like.
Start the fking rapture. (γΰ² ηΰ² )γ彑β»ββ»
β¬ββ¬γ(ΰ² _ΰ² γ)
Ah. Are we doomed? Who knows..
Like me, I have decided to fucking NOPE out of it all and just enjoy my past times as much as I cab, online and irl as much as possible .
As much as I cannot help staring at a screen myself, as soon as technology made its way into my life, I can appreciate I was blessed to experience the sweet spot of social media and social technology.
The specific clicking sound of a old dell keyboard, the retina-jarring pixeled screen running Windows XP, the clicking sound when sliding in your Flippy disc, the specific clap of a clamshell cellphone when you hang up on someone.
It's no wonder the generation now is so obsessed in reliving the OldWeb aesthetic in modern day fashion trends in the 80s, 90s, 2000s, even a lil 2010s.
In almost every aspect of western culture is reliving our childhood, teen years and early adulthood, to the point, it feels fetishized.
In my current iterati- ah age I shouldn't be saying "back in my day". Many in my generation will complain of aches and pain and think 30s is a time of accepting that we are at the cusp of a geriatric life.
Myself? I feel great.
I sure have my general aches, all have known sources. A few will always be there due to my ignorance and many can resolve with self improvement.
It's an odd time. I find myself more and more rejecting the modern day reboot of my younger days only 10 years ago. Sadly I cannot. I feel like it's poorly rated movie and I crave something, anything that gives me something close to authentic.
I can never go back to the OldWeb, but if I must be forced to live in a butchered version of my days recently gone by, at least let me live in one that not trying to suck me into the abyss of darkness that is The Algorithm.
I feel a deep dive of my take on the wild ride we are currently in that is The Algorithm needs its own dedicated blog. In that I will leave for another time.

"GaiaOnline before the economy was destroyed ΰ² _ΰ² ....."

Cut right into my soul will ya
I should find my old avatar screenshots and use them as pfps here lol.
I'm in total agreement with you. Found a palm emulator last week, almost died of joy. There was magic in the air back then, everything was fresh and exciting. It's kind of funny, tech started as beige boxes, got fancy, now we're in the grey boxes era. It's gotta get fancy again, the new flip phones are the start.
You may enjoy this yt channel, he has a series called When Phones Were Fun

It hurts everytime I log into GaiaOnline account and see how dead...and expensive everything is. It only feels like yesterday it was so active and the gold you can collect so quickly from group battles was insane. I miss it.
It was a time before the Big Tech bought up everything, introduce The Algorithm and make money from us. OldWeb was made by us for us, it was a time many younger gen can never understand.
Case in point the video series you suggested, "when phones were fun" (awesome series, I've already watched it c:) is a neat video example of how much variety we had just only 10 years ago, and now we all stare into the same black rectangle.
