an austen high fall

I've never read any of Jane Austen's books but I'm a big fan of her literature because of their film adapations. My personal favorite is the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejuidice. I didn't have to have a deep understanding of "elite" English to get what was happening on the screen. The dialogue was absolutely stunning as well as the cinematography. The part where Darcy's hand twitched after holding Elizabeth's was one of my favorite scenes. My own sentiment as well as many others who enjoy Jane Austen's pieces are a testament that you don't necessarily need to modernize any period piece to make it understandable or relatable.

Again, I'm not an avid fan of Jane Austen but as a reader, just seeing comments of the "modernized" dialogue from the 2022 adaptation of Persuasion make me cringe. Examples include but are not limited to: "He is a 10, I never trust a 10", "I am an empath", and of course, the infamous "Worse than strangers, we're exes". The second one isn't especially bad but within the context of this generation, it's a pretty obvious reference to modern slang.

What I got from most popular Jane Austen films is that you don't need to modernize anything for the audience to appreciate it. I think that the target audience would already not give two shits about the dated dialogue because that's what they are expecting. Her works are timeless pieces of art and it's already possible for people regardless of age to enjoy it as is, so I don't think modernizing anything would be necessary. Honestly, I'll only watch Persuasion just to see how much the dialogue or the overall story was modernized.

i’m violently in love with Mr darcy. perfect man. and i will forever reccomend the 1995 pride and prejudice, if you haven’t watched it already! newer austen adaptation don’t really do the original works justice at all. i felt similarly about the emma adaptation that was released last year? not sure when exactly. i’m not sure i’ll even be able to watch the new persuasion film. might have to rewatch the adaptation of sense and sensibility just to feel something…

Same here tbh. I haven't really gotten around to watching Emma or the 1995 adaptation but I just might out of curiosity. Also, you're not alone with Mr. Darcy. The man is a dream.
