how do people render their artwork???

IDK I DON'T EVEN HAVE A KNOW WHAT RENDER MEANS. LIKE YOU JUST DRAW HIGHLIGHTS AND SHADOWS AND MAKE A SMOOTH OUTLINE OR WHAT?

I think it's like adding shading, lighting, and blending it all together. It depends on the style I think though.
