Having Self-Insert Characters =/ Bad Characters

I don't really expect anyone to read this because its me rambling at around one thirty in the morning but I did want to get this out of my chest. Around the internet, you see in forums, comments or tweets about how these shows have "Self-Insert" Characters. They always portrait it as some kind of "Gotcha" moment or it's "cringe". When in reality it's far from the truth. Believe it or not, a lot of media have self-insert characters. What makes them good characters at the end of the day is how they are portrayed or what they do in the story. I know plenty of people who have made self-insert characters for their own stories and it could portray many of things of that person. Is is a representation of themself, a representation of their mental state or one of their emotions? It can represent many of things from the author and it open up plenty of stories to create. I, for one, have one character that essentially portrays my mental health. She is a character that is lonely and have two very close friends but sometimes overthink a lot when even the smallest inconvenience happens. It's something that people go through a lot and try to portray in stories too. Which is something I do genuinely love to see from others perspective. If you ever want to call out a self-insert character, at least give some reason as you why dislike it. As long as they are telling the story or portraying it good in the story then it's not a bad character nor design. It greatly improves the source material.

Awesome read, Silver. I wholeheartedly agree- I wish I could do the same but my brain keeps telling me that making stuff like that is "cringe" when I should be well past the point of such.
