hyder, alaska rambing

first blog entry, dunno what to write.. so im just gonna dump everything i know about my most niche interest here. ....

hyder, Alaska! its a teeney tiny town with a population of about 60, right along the Alaska/British Columbia border. so close, in fact, that many people go to school and work in the neighboring B.C town of Stewart, hyder shares the B.C area code, sets its time to pacific time instead of Alaskan time, accepts Canadian and American money (except for the post office) and imports utilities from canada. The towns are connected by international street. There are no roads from hyder to the rest of alaska. The only way to access the rest of alaska from hyder is to take a plane (there used to be a ferry). essentially totally isolated from the rest of the state,,, fun!

hyder is popular with long distance motorcyclists. you can get "hyderized" if you take a shot of everclear in the town and you can get a certificate!
hyder does have a school but it needs at least 10 students for the state to provide a teacher,
which doesn't happen often because, y'know, there's a population of 80 and hardly any kids. the few kids that do live in hyder go to school in Stewart. due to covid, the border was closed for a period, barring the kids from their school and friends.

its a super pretty place with a nice wooded mountainous backdrop. the river "fish creek" runs through the town which is a popular bear watching spot! especially during salmon run season

theres more but i realize this sounds quite like a boring school project so i will stop here... hyder Alaska my beloved <3
