I've been watching #Friends on #HBOMax again(I'm currently in the middle of Season 7) and I've been thinking about how it would work if #NBC were to make the show now instead of in 1994. The big question is "Could it work?"
Well, for one thing, they would not be able to afford those big-ass apartments in New York City nowadays. Hell, they shouldn't have been able to afford them back in 1994, even with rent control. But in 2022, a sous-chef like Monica or a struggling actor like Joey would be lucky to get a single room and have to share a bathroom with all the tenants.
Also, the main characters would probably not be as white they were. Since #NYC is the most diverse, mulitcultural city in the world, you'd think there'd be a less white cast. Unless you count Joey as "ethnic". There's also the issue of homophobia and transphobia, especially in Chandler. Of course, Chandler was traumatized when his father left him at such a young age, but I digress. Not to mention Ross' uneasy relationship with his lesbian ex-wife, Carol and trying to force stereotypical gender roles onto his son when he wanted to play with a #Barbie.
Joey's hitting on women would also get him "cancelled" nowadays thanks to the #MeToo movement.
Finally, the whole deal where Ross says they "were on a break" could easily be avoided if Rachel had just sent him a text. Granted, that was back in the late 90s, but tech has come along way since then. Most of the sitcom tropes of old are now obsolete because of technology.
My guess is that a show like Friends could not be made nowadays, so NBC should be happy they made it when they did. Or maybe I'm putting too much thought into this.
How would ''Friends'' work in 2022?
