i mentioned a film in a recent bulletin i heard about the film from tv tropes the 1998 film the faculty it's noted on tv tropes as being a horror film about a parasitic alien the alien supposedly being an allegory for communism i decided to give this film a watch first off with the only subscription service assessable to me right now being disney+ finding this film in english (there was a spanish dub that's far easier to find) was incredibly difficult likely due to copyright so i won't disclose where i watched it the film is supposed to be a horror film other than a scene at the very begining this doesn't really fit i think a more fitting genre for it is teenage drama before i go into further detail i want to go back to the search real quick when i was looking for the film i ended up also watching a 2013 film by the same name that film is what i would call an actual horror film not the same kind of horror as say friday the 13th more of a psychological horror the 2013 film is about a drug trial that goes wrong it's a very obviously budget film but if you're into horror film it's also worth a watch but back to the 98 film which has way better production in this film (my description here will be a back of the box synopsis when spoiler warning is needed i will warn you) highschool teachers have their minds hijacked by parasitic aliens and it is up to a ragtag group of teens to save the school and the world from being taken over by these aliens the only criticism i have of the film is that it promotes mcarthyism
(spoiler warning) the aliens are killed by a drug that dehydrates the body to be sure that the alien is not among them the group all take the drug (this would fail as the queen of the aliens hides the fact that she didn't actually take the drug) later on there would be a scene where one of the teens run out of the hideout the teens have created of the gym to try and make the coach take the drug this would fail and he would come back begging the rest of the group to be let in they make him take the drug where he reveals that he is infected by the alien parasite (end spoiler)
now while all that is good and all it's still an obvious problem that the film is basically saying that you need to cast off parts of the population infected with bad political ideas when you remember that the parasite is supposed to be an allegory for communism and it is a good one at that there's one scene in particular that brings to mind images of the soviet union or more recently Chinese armies how hive mind like they are that being said it's still a really good film that promotes individuality and i think it is still worth watching even if not for it's agenda it's a really good film with tons of 90's cheese now to that robert a hinlein book i saw mentioned on that page the dudes a good author so the book i expect to be really good and i did just finish one of his other books recently so i have a heinlin void to fill right now i'll probably listen to the audio book though i don't think i can get through one of his books faster than a library check out
