Down the DS9 rabbithole

So I've been a fan of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for a few years -- I preferred it to the other Trek shows as it contained continuing storylines, grey morality, and a sense of realism as compared to the idealism and self-containedness of the other Trek series. As of late, however, I've fallen down the rabbithole of DS9 content on Tumblr -- specifically, a large group of people who ship Dr. Bashir, the CMO of DS9, with Garak, the tailor/former intelligence agent. I'd never given their thing much thought since I like to focus more on plot and characterization than shipping (I avoided the Voltron: Legendary Defender fandom for that show's run because they were busy fighting over ships and ignoring the point of the show, that being giant robot action).

However, much of the DS9 Tumblr community is able to do what the writers were forbidden by Paramount to do: make them a couple (as DS9 aired in the 90s; furthermore, Garak was played by his actor, Andy Robinson, as omnisexual in his first appearance before the execs made the writers tone him down). And quite a lot of it can be funny, as the content expands from just shipping the two into examining every facet of Trek, DS9 or not, so you never know what you might find on your Tumblr dashboard. I've even contributed a story involving Garak hiring the "Jack Pack" (a group of "enhanced" humans like Dr. Bashir who are basically their time's equivalent to autism) to not only serve as employees in his tailor shop, but also function as intelligence analysts (which was basically what they tried to do in the actual episode; some EU novels had them join Starfleet Intelligence), since I didn't like how their next episode had them "fix" one of their members, who Dr. Bashir then attempted to romance (basically a billion red flags). If you want to read that fic, it's on my AO3 here. But hopefully I can find the time, the ability and the drive to write more -- ADHD is a PITA.
