Is it a weird thing to think about but as I grew up and my own music taste matured and changed so did the music of Busted and Fightstar singer Charlie Simpson.
So who is Charlie Simpson? He is British musician who started off his career in the pop punk band Busted who had major hits in the UK in The early 2000s and sold out places like Wembley arena multiple times.
Now even though when you listen to Busted you would likely class it as pop punk they actually got classed as being a boy band by multiple facets of the media at the time and therefore lost a lot of credibility with rock music fans and tended to have more girl preteen crowd. I personally was about 12-13 at the time and they basically acted as a gateway to edgier rock music for me and led to me learning guitar, not cutting my hair and generally being your typical rock music teenager. Not long into that phase I started to pretend I did not like Busted just because I wanted to be "cool".
Eventually Busted did break up when I was about 15 and after that Charlie started a new band called Fightstar basically because he wanted more creditability. Fightstar would probably be classed more as nu or alternative metal which of course with me being a rock kid and liking linkin park, Korn etc was right up my alley. I was an angsty teenager at the time and the screaming and heavy guitar was just awesome to me at the time (still is).
Fightstar lasted a lot longer than Busted and turned out to be successful at least in terms of credibility for Charlie Simpson.
After awhile Charlie again wanted to do something different, by this point I was in University and had matured (at least musically) and started listening to other genres such as folk, country and acoustic stuff. What did Charlie do? He brought out a folk album as a solo artist.
Charlie went on to do two folk albums as a solo artist which to me at least are excellent listens.
In more recent times I have been listening to all types of music and of course Charlie is making all different kinds. He got back with Fightstar for an album and then back with Busted for a couple of albums (one of which was a sythpop album of all things) and is now again doing solo stuff which I would say has more of a pop rock vibe to it.
It is very strange for an musician to have the success of Charlie Simpson in so many different genre but well done to him and I look forward to hearing what else he comes out with. I'm sure I will likely enjoy it too.
