Ah the internet, what a wonderful and horrible place! When you think of the internet you probably think of sites like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, but the internet is so much more than this! The history and reclamation of the internet is something that really interests me, and it really saddens me how many people are completely unaware of the interesting and beautiful side of the internet; The side of the internet that's focused on creativity and fun.
Being born in [my birth year], I never got to experience the internet back in the days of MySpace and personal websites, which is why I was ecstatic when I heard about myspace.windows93.net AKA Myspace93. I had never seen so much uniqueness and customization on the internet; i fell in love instantly. I spent days learning CSS and customizing my page so it would look perfect; and that was my first introduction to web design and the greater community of the small web. But it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows forever. One faithful day, there was a data breach. Some drama from the management caused the passwords of many users to be leaked, and as a result, myspace.windows93.net shut down. Now living as an archive of what it once was. I was shattered. What had become a safe haven for so many people was no more. But there was hope!
Another MySpace clone was on the horizon. SpaceHey, a MySpace clone made by 19 year old AnTheMaker was here and ready to become the new home of Myspace93 users. SpaceHey was a new page. It was still a MySpace clone, but it was a clone of a different time period. Myspace93 was only customizable with CSS, while SpaceHey took HTML; this made it the perfect step from pure CSS to HTML. I quickly learned confidence in basic HTML along with refining my CSS skills. I was ready to create a website.
On Aug 1, 2021 I created my website. It was very basic, but in just a few weeks, I received a message asking me if I wanted to be in a group chat of a few other beginner web developers. This would change everything. After accepting this invitation, I was added to a discord group chat of 2 or 3 other people, but this number would quickly grow and we would become a nice friend group. This greatly motivated me to improve and add to my website. When we reached 10 members we created a full discord server, and a few months after, we established a working web ring. We are a small but close community now of web developers and I've made many friends.
The internet can be horrible, but it can also be fantastic. Ive made many friends across the internet in places most people wouldn't expect, and I couldn't be more thankful. If people would take one moment to explore the web outside of basic social media apps, they could find some magical things.
