yeezus review

hi do you wanna see my undying love for yeezus by kanye west? yes no? maybe so? WELL here's my review :) i wrote this just the other day and decided that i could post it here!! so here it is...

as a musician and artist myself, it boggles my mind that there are people who can't appreciate yeezus as the masterpiece it is. this album is my favorite album at the time of writing this review, and while that's subject to potentially change in the future, i'm forever going to consider it something of musical genius. i don't personally mind and fully recognize the extreme, industrial hip-hop sound of this record being too much on some people's ears―but if this sound is something you can enjoy, i guarantee you―it is remarkable and so much more. the way this album was constructed feels like it was perfectly crafted to bring the most amount of emotion out of the listener; from the almost frightening and maddening intro of on sight, being co-produced by daft punk (their iconic synths are well-present throughout the song) to the intense delivery of songs like black skinhead (in which kanye successfully turns vocals into his very own instrumental), there are so many ideas and moments planted throughout the tracklist that seem to aim for a sudden and shocking surprise. other songs on this project seem intent on fully submerging the listener into the atmosphere and feel of the beat―for instance, take hold my liquor and/or blood on the leaves. the former has a notable instrumental break in which the guitars work their way through pure bliss, and the latter has both an incredibly unique beat (that sure-as-hell sets it apart from the rest) and one of the hardest beat drops in the entirety of kanye's discography. sonically, yeezus is very easily kanye's best work as a producer, and i would even say it's near-flawless. while initially hated and ragged on by critics and fans alike, i can confidentially say that this project has aged like a fine wine. there are many who still find themselves struggling to warm up to the frantic energy of yeezus, and to repeat: i don't blame anyone who can't get into it. this is extremely experimental, beyond a doubt. but in my opinion, kanye executes everything here with exceeding expectations. i have yet to even mention some of the other highlights, such as new slaves and bound 2―the latter of which being one of the two huge hits on this record. in old kanye fashion, sample flips run throughout the entire song, and he successfully creates a rapping style that's intentionally dragging and somewhat even lazy-sounding to create what is an honestly incredible product. and, speaking of new slaves, in terms of rapping... i'd say that there's some excellence here too. the aforementioned track features an unapologetic kanye criticizing materialism, the media, and so much more in what is an insanely active expression of anger and annoyance. the delivery on the first three songs is very cocky, aggressive, and over-the-top, but in the best way possible―it completely compliments the instrumental of each track and makes kanye feel rather dominant. one of the more iconic verses would have to be that of hold my liquor's, in which effective storytelling is used by west to express reflections on his own life and attempted improvement. justin vernon and chief keef both have great performances on the track too. of course, in true kanye fashion, yeezus has its fair share of silly lyrics too―"eating asian pussy, all i need is sweet and sour sauce" is most definitely an iconic one. whether you find that funny enough to like is up to you, but given that the song itself, "i'm in it," is very unashamedly sex-focused and practically aware of how ridiculous it is... well, i'd say the oddity fits right in. although, continuing off that thought, it's worth noting that kanye makes no effort in censoring his thoughts or ideas here; every song comes from a place of raw feeling, including his infamous sense of pride and ego. while many don't particularly enjoy hearing kanye gloat about himself, i think the self-acknowledged eminence only adds to the power of this album. i've definitely found myself looping the almost comedically-titled track "i am a god" every now and then, even regardless of most considering it a weaker song on the album.
all in all, artistry oozes from yeezus and kanye is at his peak here; from rapping to production to samples to features, hardly anything misses a mark. yeezus is timeless art. above all else, this is an album you need to feel to truly understand.

basically tl;dr i love the fuck out of this album LMAOO
