Nekojiru-Udon / Cat Soup 2001 OVA

I thought I'd share one of my favorite films! Its a short animated film based on the manga Nekojiru-Udon, also known as Cat Soup! Unfortunately there are few places to watch it online, and they do not have amazing quality. DVDs of the film are rare and thus very expensive!

A brief synopsis if you want! [though I think it's fun to go into this movie blind]:
The story is lose and very interpretative, but basically the movie follows two cat siblings, younger brother Nyatta and his older sister, Nyako. When Nyako falls ill, the spirit of death attempts to take her to the afterlife. Her younger brother runs after her however and while struggling to pull Nyako away from the spirit, rips her soul in half. With half a soul Nyako is technically alive, but in a vegetable-like state, and in order to return to her normal form, Nyatta and her must retrieve the other half of her soul in the afterlife. The film has a lot of symbolism and also has no spoken dialogue!

Content Warning: The film contains violence, including blood, nudity [not in a sexual context], and lots of surreal and disturbing imagery!

Here is a youtube link where you can watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlLBX4EIlJY

If anyone also loves this film or watches it let me know your thoughts! I think its a very artistically interesting film!

I watched this movie recently!!!! It was definitely a shock to watch the first time! Trying to understand it, especially with all the bizarre imagery, was definitely a stressor LOL. The seemingly unneeded violence and gore confused me at first, as I thought it was representing something more, some bigger idea, but after reading a few chapters of the manga and seeing all the senseless killing in it, the movie's dark themes began to make sense. Realizing that the movie was a tribute to Nekojiru, the mangaka behind the Nekojiru-Udon manga, who had passed a few years before the movie's release, gives the movie a sort of power. It's a beautiful way to honor her disturbing work.

Yes I totally agree! I always liked how the movie felt like a new interpretation and spin on her work while still keeping the same dark and unmistakable Nekojiru-Udon feel! I do think it is a great way to honor her and keep her art alive. The fact that it was made in the wake of her death and was partly overseen by her husband always made me feel like the film was about grief and losing a loved one
