analog horror

over the past two days, i've fallen into a fascination with the oddity that is analog horror. i was interested in horror before then, of course (one of my favorite movies in my bio is the texas chainsaw massacre), but analog horror works differently and frightens another part of you.

it began with Gemini Home Entertainment, a youtube channel masquerading as a catalog of old VHS tapes about various topics, such as a documentary about "earth's weirdest animals", or a wilderness survival guide, but what i found so fascinating about this series is its unifying concept of these creatures called "woodcrawlers" taking over people's bodies and, i suppose, eating their souls. the further you ventured into the channel, the further you ventured into the story of these woodcrawlers and their lore, without it necessarily being given to you directly.

i suppose that's what i love about analog horror, this idea of something not necessarily being good, but not being malicious, being corrupted and telling this story indirectly to you and finding your insecurities in the meantime. in many cases, these videos are instructional, so there's an added power dynamic where the video literally has power over you and is teaching you how to do something, no matter how horrifying it turns out to be.

i've watched all of the GHE videos so far, and i'm planning on getting into local 58 and the walten files next. anyone have any suggestions for what i should get into?

with fearlessness and fascination,
Strawberry Cyanide🍓🎸
