I just finished watching The Power of the Dog. I don't really have much to say about it. I thought it was a slow burn film that had a pretty straight forward plot. But after reading several comments and discovering the ending of the book, I have a few things to say. Nothing controversial, just my thoughts.
I'm sympathetic to both the main characters, to be honest. Phil had a lot going on for him and he was going through really major stuff as well. But that's not me excusing his toxicity. He was an asshole. I did genuinely feel bad when Peter killed him. For a few moments, I thought I caught a glimpse of his redemption arc on the horizon. He really liked Peter, there's no doubt about that. At the same time, can I blame him for doing it? Absolutely not. If someone tormented me and my mother and I had to watch her deteriorate right in front of me? Nobody in their right mind would be happy about that. Phil was in love but Peter had every right, in my opinion.
Overall, I liked the movie. It's the type of film I wouldn't mind playing in the background as I worked. It was masterfully made. The acting was superb. If you're a fan of really slow burn films, this one's for you.
