Marina held my hand through the basics: How to create a character, walk, and fight. My character was starting to look tough with new armor and weapons. But even if she had the best equipment, she could not have made up for the person pressing the keys. We moved to a new location. We spawned on the docks. Not a problem for a seasoned player like Marina, but unbeknownst to us, this plank of wood posed more of a threat to the newbie Draenei than anything we had fought so far. Marina looked away for one second, then the next thing she knew, I was shouting "I'm stuck! I'm stuck!" I had inadvertently taken a step backwards instead of forward, and plunged into the sea. The big problem: I knew how to walk and fight, but not swim. I pressed the 'W' key, assuming it would take me up. Instead, I promptly dashed under a dock, and got stuck under it. Instead of turning around, I accidently adjusted the camera angle. I had a very nice view of my drowning character, and nothing else. Thankfully, after years of friendship Marina is fluent in panicked goblin babble. After a moment of bewilderment, she told me how to fix my camera. I only managed this partially, but enough to work with. After a brief, loud fight with my wooden tomb, I somehow found myself aimlessly floating in the open sea. An undeniable improvement, but still drowning. The high risk swim lesson that followed saw me swerve off into several wrong directions, and then finally up, down, up again, down again, up but lost...Marina almost had to jump in and bring me back herself. Somehow, I made it back to the dock (the only way out of the water), miraculously alive, and now aware that the space bar was the path to air. The moral of the story is to stay humble. You can have the finest Alliance training, and be the hero everyone is talking about, but still be bested by a plank of wood.
(There she is, not drowning yet, but soon. Notice the hermit crab? I did!)
