The first summer I knew you, you showed me
how to count the hours by the way shadows fall in an orchard.
We mixed magic potions in soap dishes, let insects
crawl over our fingertips.
I don’t remember when hospital beds first arrived
in the house, or when she started to fade away.
I don’t remember when we first realized
that not everything can be fixed.
I just remember that next summer, we released
paper cranes into the skies at her funeral,
and you showed me all the best places
to search for ghosts.
I know how to measure your father’s grief. I can count
the memories that still haunt your home.
But I will never learn to measure emptiness
or to count the three thousand miles between us.
