week 1 - FOSS

soooo, i don't tend to run foss stuff on my main workstation but i do have a bunch of apps on my phone that are. lately i've been experimenting with the idea of de-googling my phone - starting small, yk? but it's definitely intriguing. unplugging from what the internet's become, where sites and apps and services are kind of melding into this weird homogenous mess that seems like quicksand.

so far i've managed to configure an alternate store app, a mail app, a texting app, and a maps app. i also have a foss music app as well as a file manager and PDF reader. they're all working well, but as usual many could use the eye of a competent UI designer. but i get it. labor of love and all that. if i don't like it i can fork my own version and do with it what i will. and you know what? i've been tempted to. a long time ago i coded my own word processor in visual basic, the most barebones thing possible

in terms of OS, i've experimented with a bunch of linux distros on and off for a good many years and while it's definitely a lot more usable than it used to be, there are still a lot of frustrating roadblocks that just make many distros a pain to use. i think of myself as pretty OS-agnostic; i have a sentimental attachment to earlier versions of windows (and i still think 7 was the most polished version they've ever come out with, fight me) and i've been using macOS for years and years now after i was given an old macbook like over a decade ago. mac and windows just do what i need them to do. and for the most part linux did as well, i'll give it that. i was online pretty much all the time, i had a free PDF reader and office suite and separate players for visual media and music. and they worked for ages. i used Pop!_OS for over a year and was plenty happy because things just worked. until they didn't. and i still had to rely on the CLI for many more things than i was happy with using it for, but that wasn't a really big deal. not a stranger to a good command line.

the thing is, imo, foss is definitely a great step... in some direction. and that direction depends on you, i guess. i'm definitely embracing it. there's a ton of cool foss stuff out there. and for a lot of people, foss isn't a step - it's the end of the road. and i think that's where i'm looking to be someday.

FOSS is definitely the future, that sucks to hear about your Pop!OS not working all of a sudden. Linux can be time consuming when it doesn't work correctly but (at least for me), it can be very fulfilling when you get it working. I don't blame you for going to Windows or Mac since they just work out of the box, but my gripe with those OS's is when things don't work correctly, it's harder to get/look for help. There's been plenty of times where a fresh install fixes whatever bug I've had for some unexplained reason. Plus I just like CLI programs because the "hackerman" aesthetic.

I guess it's up to whatever you're looking for. And as a Arch Linux user, this is the time where I have to do the necessary "I use Arch btw". Happy Hacktober :)

i totally agree with you. and happy hacktober to you as well :) my gripes are superficial at best, because i can't resist spinning up a linux VM from time to time just to experiment with things. plus, i revived an old netbook with linux mint and it works just fine. there are just the few clunky things that come with the nature of decentralized development i guess! i'm a stickler for UI, and sometimes package things kind of get messy. i'm not a big gamer either, but most of the games i play only really work on older versions of Windows anyway! so no big loss. but linux has served me pretty fine for what it is. and as far as development and coding goes it's pretty peerless. thanks for the comment!
