Quick advice for punks starting out

patches:

☠ the point of patches is to make clothes more durable. a good pair of patch trousers will last for many years, as they eventually dissolve under the patches
☠ do not use iron on patches unless you're planning to sew them -> they peel off fast
☠ when sewing on patches: use dental floss or durable embroidery thread. it's cheap and lasts much longer than regular thread
☠ typically, you should be making your own patches with old fabric from clothes no longer used. although, you can definitely buy patches from punk-owned businesses such as chaos creations
☠ when painting patches, use a mix of fabric and acrylic paint and use an iron to set them with heat. i personally use shoe protector spray to make mine waterproof and handwash any clothes with patches on them

lace code:
☠ remember: lace code is regional. you can't go around clobbering randomers with white laces
☠ but if you're getting into the punks scene here's a general rule for lace colours:
☠ blue: implies that you have killed/plan to kill police officers (be careful with that one)
☠ purple: gay pride
☠ white: white supremacy. don't you dare
☠ yellow: not racist
☠ green: actively anti-racist

punk music:
☠ in the grand scheme of things, punk's root is politics. you don't necessarily HAVE to listen to punk music if you really don't want to, but it pays to have knowledge of the genre and the messages that the music conveys
☠ bikini kill and brat mobile are both female-fronted riotgrrrl bands who laid the foundations for later punk bands
☠ dead kennedys are a punk band who make very important political commentaries and overall great music
☠ crass is a british-based punk band, i especially recommend big a little a
☠ if you want more ideas, use my spotify link and go on my punk playlist. some of the songs there are not specifically punk in genre but fit into punk ideology: anarchy, eat the rich etc
