THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY

The Shelves of an Evergrowing Library

This is a thread where I post the books I've been reading and give them a short spoiler free review!
you may or may not notice just how many of these were recommended by Jacob Geller...

PIRANESI

Piranesi is an amazing book. About a creature who enhabits an amazing world of connected rooms filled with marble statues, Susanna not only provides a lush details but instills within the reader a curiosity only matched by the protagonist himself. Personally, my favourite chapters were those in the first act; following the daily tasks of Piranesi as he admires the pure beauty he is surrounded by daily. I remember reading it late at night, the wind howling, and getting genuinly creeped out - how intentional that feeling was is debatable however.

HOUSE OF LEAVES

An artwork as much as it is a book. Wikipedia describes the book as "non-trivial" and that is very true: footnotes loop back to each other as they annotate a novel retelling of Daedalus's Labyrinth and the minotaur, the cubes of empty space sit in the book as words fall around them, fiction and non-fiction blur into a semi-lucid dream between two readers. This is a book telling a story of another story and within that story is a house that contains a character who's flaws radiate out. It's infectious.
If you can, get the colour version - it really emphasises some very important things.

ANNIHILATION

Melancholic, vivid, terrifying horror. I would describe Jeff Vandemeer's writing style on this book as Earnest Hemmingway if he but as much love into the scenery as the characters. This is a book about 4 (1) explorers as they descend (ascend) into an exlusion zone. I refuse to say anything else, go read this book and then maybe the other 2 books in the series (I haven't read them but I'm sure they're good). Or watch the film version, though I've heard mixed reviews.

im thinking of ending things

Go watch Jacob Geller's video on this, spoiler warning but you can't talk about it without spoiling it really. All I'll say is "I'm scared. I feel a little crazy. I'm not lucid. The assumptions are right. I can feel my fear growing. Now is the time for the answer. Just one question. One question to answer.". The film version's directed by Charlie Kaufman and looks amazing.
