Frog Of The Day!! 13/05-2022

The frog of the day is the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog! <3

It's a type of poison dart frog, which is a very big species of frog. It's found in Central America. It's often found in lowlands and forests, but also plantations. There are about 30 variations of Starwberry Poison Dart frog, with different colour morphs.

It's poison is created by it's diet, eating certain types of mites and ants. Two frogs (male and female) help raising the tadpoles together. The male protects the water and surrounding area, and the female feeds them. The females usually don't look for the best frog, but instead go to the closest male caller.

They grow to about 17-24 mm in lenght, so they are quite small. In the wild they live up to 1-3 years, but in captivity they may live up to 10 (or sometimes even 25 years!!!!)

Their population is decreasing due to humans disturbing their habitat, and de-foresting, but they are right now of the least concern.

In captivity they are harmless, as they produce their toxin from their diet in the wild. They are quite good starter pets. They can be kept alone, but also fare well when sharing space with one frog of the opposite gender (watch out for tadpoles).

woaw! I think I knew that they got their poison from their diet but I had never considered that when they were kept in captivity they were not poisonous. That's cool. I always thought people that had them as pets were maybe a little crazy for having such a poisonous frog
