Untitled: The Detroit Project Ep3: “What is it like to be part of a Virtual Trucking Company?” Part 1 of 2
Greetings everyone!
I’m Doctor Detroit.
In my last blog I mentioned being apart of the convoys for the ITC, a Virtual Trucking Company, just like how there’s communities for shoot ‘em up games, even app games, there are Virtual Trucking Companies or VTRs for American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2. I’ve had the fortune and misfortune to be with 2 different companies, 1 I am still with to this day, the other, I was formally with. This, is the story. Also this is gonna be a long blog, so settle in, cause it’s gonna be a ride!
The two companies I’ve been with are Brother Sister Trucking, or BST, and the International Trucking Company, both companies gather miles in both games, however, it’s the ITC that actually gets it and is actually good! BST on the other hand…was like trucking in North Korea. Allow me to explain
BST is a huge company filled with tons of truckers, and people from all walks of life, including vets and even real truckers! The place is definitely interesting….however, the company has a dark side that I got to see first hand. First of all, one of the higher ups, is named Dallas, he’s this older guy who would at first seems friendly, but unfortunately, he is cantankerous, and quite cranky. He runs the place with an iron fist. Make a mistake in his presences and you will be reprimanded. Infact, the rules there are quite strict too!
The rules absolutely kill the company of any fun, when I drove for them, you had to hit 10,000 miles per month as a requirement, which doesn’t seem like a lot, but it’s what you must do to get them! They were more concerned about getting REAL miles. At this point I should mention, when we log our miles in an app called TrucksBook, it records your miles in game, REAL miles means you didn’t go past a certain MPH, RACE miles means you did go over the speed limit. Well, BST wanted you to get real miles only! If you got race miles too many times, the higher ups would get very angry!
Also, the convoys were an absolute disaster. For one thing, the convoys would have a ton of people, but what was worse, was the fact you had to run your truck with the exact same livery as the company! INFACT, they made sure your livery had the exact codes, exact colors and wheel settings, everything had to be the same! Including trailers. If you showed up with the wrong trailer, or showed up with a scheme where one of the colors was just a shade too dark, Dallas would get on your case, and force you to change it to the right way. He’d make you think you just insulted the entire nation.
Then the staging, photo and then the convoy would begin, but unfortunately you couldn’t even speak or get a word in because Dallas and 5 of his slaves-I mean staff members would be the only ones to talk. And if that wasn’t enough, every SUNDAY night, there would be a meeting, a MANDATORY meeting you had to attend! Even if you were in the middle of a delivery they expected you to stop, get out of the game and go to VC only to wait a full hour and a half for it to start because they had to wait for their admin and his 13 year old MOD brother who sounded no more than 5 years old to be honest to join the call.
I should point out the only way to miss the meeting was to say you were out of town or had family issues. Plus, the company would be in every, single, truck show! Truck shows are events where a group of truckers arrive at one of the big towns all lined up hoping to win the awards. However, I felt like most of these “truck shows” were made up cause they kept getting 1st place in almost everything. These truck shows you also HAD TO attend or you’d get in trouble. Basically, if you were even absent for even an hour, they would know, and they, would tell you to start getting miles.
I’m amazed I stayed as long as I did, I found the place to be an absolute shit hole! BST DOESNT care about your personal life, they don’t give a damn if you’re busy. They want you active 24/7 and playing by their rules or else you’ll get removed and blacklisted everywhere! I left them in October of 2020 to go be with a different company, one that actually felt better, and more friendly to be in, BUT THAT, is a blog, for another day!
