NOTE: I had a long elaborate post that was gorgeous work of art, but because I clicked out of Chrome entirely by accident, it’s all gone. Thus, I’m just copying and pasting what was in the initial bulletin, and then adding the part where I "rated" each song on the Pure Moods Vol. 1 album.
There are several defining formative *events that are quintessential to the Millennial experience; HOWEVER, is this commercial also embedded within the archives of your childhood experience? If so, then congratulations, you're a Millennial (and most likely an American one). This post will be my extension of this claim, furthered by my brief review of the entire Pure Moods, Vol. 1 album. *Per Buzzfeed News, we're lookin' at you 9/11, the Great Recession, Obama's presidency, the rise of the global internet.
I've been thinking about why this commercial stands out among all the other commercials I recall from my childhood. Was it the ubiquity, where it seemed like Nickelodeon would put this thing on FULL BLAST during every commercial break? Was it the c h i l l ViBeZ emitted by the whimsical, euphoric images merged with the therapeutically unique new age tunes? I am of the opinion that it's both.
I've listed to the whole album years before, but like acid, ever time is an E X P E R I E N C E.
So without further ado, I shall "rate" each song on the Pure Moods Vol. 1 album (the 1997 re-release) through an elaborate '90s-esque scenario.
Track 1: "Return to Innocence" by Enigma
The musical equivalent of playground parachute day in your Elementary P.E. class.
Track 2: "Orinoco Flow" by Enya
Being by a body of water while immersed in the sunshine all day; there might be some semi-rough waves, but there's also the thrill that there's a splendid feast of Goldfish/Dunkaroos/PB&J/Sunny D/Capri-Sun for lunch!
Track 3: "Sweet Lullaby" by Deep Forest
When you decide to chase fireflies with the squad real quick before staying up to watch SNICK.
Track 4: "Oxygene Part IV" by Jean Michel Jarre
Taking a (insert your main childhood game console of choice here) out of the box, and feeling like you're on the cusp of a technological revolution—that your life will never be the same! It can also act as a montage of all the hours you spent playing that particular gaming console.
Track 5: "The X-Files Theme (DADO Paranormal Activity Mix)" by DJ Dado
The soundtrack of your first descent down the rabbit hole of your first internet conspiracy theory investigation. *~*ThE tRuTh Is O U T T H E R E*~*
Track 6: "Tubular Bells Part 1" by Mike Oldfield
Your first long distance trip by car, and I'm talking about the one that's more than 4 hours. First is the delusional thought that this won't be so bad. Then the annoyance of your fellow humans begins (perhaps even with the outside motorists AND your travel companions inside the car). The visuals/sightseeing takes the edge off a bit, there's even delightful random moments, but the journey still feels like it takes forever.
Track 7: "Sadeness, Pt. 1" by Enigma
Calling on the strength of your descendants to defeat a boss (if not the final boss) of the video game you've been working to complete. This is also applicable to hitting the final stretch of a LONG book that has taken you two weeks or more to read.
Track 8: "Adiemus" by Karl Jenkins
This song is the representation of being trapped on a horrible 5th grade field trip that involves hiking. Even though you keep falling and holding massive Ls, you keep getting better, and the view improves. Then, you FINALLY reach the top, like a mini-version of Rocky.
Track 9: "Crockett's Theme" by Jan Hammer
When you're HELLA SURE that your younger sibling stole your Tamagotchi, and you're DETERMINED to catch that ass red-handed.
Track 10: "Theme from The Mission" by Ennio Morricone
That dramatic moment when you have to say goodbye to your Summer Camp Bestie, or the random kid close to your age that you played with for a few days while on vacation with the fam.
Track 11: "Main Title Theme from The Last Emperor" by David Byrne
The montage music for the melancholy vibe when you're leaving somewhere LIT, especially if it's over the summer. That, or the sad realization that you'll never truly be a karate master like the Karate Kid.
Track 12: "Yeha-Noha (Wishes of Happiness & Prosperity)" by Sacred Spirit
The joy of finally finding like-minded individuals on the internet, and chatting with them for hours on end.
Track 13: "Theme from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me" by Angelo Badalamenti
SHOWER THOUGHTS. RANDOM SHOWER THOUGHTS, or the vibe of asking your Mom or another older individual an endless barrage of questions, because you need certainty about SOMETHING in your life.
Track 14: "Makambo" by Geoffrey Oryema
You missed what should have been the game winning shot in front of the entire school on Field Day, and now you're on the sidelines starring off into space, thinking about how your entire existence is a lie.
Track 15: "My Wife with Champagne Shoulders" by Mark Isham
The simultaneous fear, enthusiasm, and reverence for the impending new Millennium.
Track 16: "The Promise" by Michael Nyman
Your Parent/Guardian on a quest to find what you requested for your birthday/holiday gift during Black Friday, only to endure traffic AND the grown adults fighting over Cabbage Patch Kids Dolls/Tickle Me Elmos in order to get what you wanted.
Track 17: "Lily Was Here" by David A. Stewart and Candy Dulfer
You're in a grocery store with your Grandma in the '90s. All you want is a magazine or a decent book to occupy yourself while she shops, but they ONLY have cheesy romance novels with Fabio on the cover.
If you're interested in listening to the whole thing in full, or if you just want to see if my song descriptors are on point, just check out this playlist on YouTube. SIDE NOTE: There are Spotify playlists, but they're missing Track 15.

I was a teenager when this came out, and all of my alt female friends totally had it. Amusingly, Sadeness Pt. 1 was 100% the go to spicy time jam of baby BDSMers at the time. XD
