So. Let's talk Hannigram for a few minutes.
It's definitely my most favorite ship by far, partly because Hannibal and Will were such good characters and they were written well, and mainly because I wasn't queerbaited. I don't know if it has something to do with my being straight or how shitty media can be sometimes that I was elated to finally find a show that went through with an LGBT ship. I'd honestly say a bit of both.
Growing up in a very conservative Christian household had its setbacks as an ally. One of said setbacks was the lack of LGBTQIA+ content that I was exposed to. I had little to no idea what LGBT representation should look like in TV shows, movies, music, etcetera. But after being transferred to a bigger school, I was able to be surrounded by a lot of new people, especially allies and members of the community themselves. Eventually, I became more curious about LGBT media since, again, I had no idea what I should be looking for. Trial and error, if you will. Looking back, I've seen so much queerbait in media as a kid. And majority of the time I wasn't even aware because I thought that "yes, they are just very good friends, how sweet". That's bullshit, of course, now I know that. Anyhow, back to Hannigram.
Hannibal and Will had so much chemistry in the show, there's no denying that. I first went into the show curious about just how good their chemistry was after watching some analysis videos on their relationship. Needless to say, the show didn't disappoint. And the way the writers went through with it made me love it even more. Having said all of this, I'm not saying this show had all-in-all the best LBGT representation in all of media. I don't think I'm in the place to say that. But it was one of the first pieces of media that I watched that didn't steer away from it. I do hope to see more representation in media though. I'm currently in the works of making my family accustomed to LGBT shows/movies, so wish me luck on both of those regards.
