Pacific Rim and Militarism

I find pacific rim's relationship with military imagery really, really interesting. Guillermo Del Toro made a point not to use any actual military ranks for the PPDC and kept this military-like organization as far away (metaphorically) from any real life military as possible. It's definitely structured like a military, but its also shown to be more of a resistance against the actual authorities in the kaiju war at the point the movie takes place.

I haven't seen Pacific Rim either, but that makes me want to see it even more. Interestingly, I wrote a similar position into my one mecha story so far:

"I'm surprised the SAM isn't a military organization."

"We tried that at first, but you don't beat a race of machines by trying to be more disciplined and organized than they are."

Glad this sentiment is growing in recent years.

yeah! one of the reasons I really like this movie. I'd highly recommend Pacific Rim if you like a good mecha vs kaiju story with interesting characters and worldbuilding!
